engineer and an architect, and heâs there to consult about building schools. For everyone. I mean, schools for girls too. You know they wouldnât let girls go to school, I mean those people, the Taliban, and my father says the schools heâs going to build, they will definitely admit girls.â The words pour out. âWhen he went there, I mean, when he flew over last week, it was Friday, and we were watching a movie, and my sister and I didnât even know he was gone. He couldnât tell us, it was a security thing.â
âI understand,â Mr. Julius says. âSo how long will he be gone, Sprig?â
âToo long,â she blurts.
âHow long is that?â
âI donât know exactly. Last night when he called, he said it could be six weeks or even two months.â
âThat probably does seem like a long time to you.â
âIt is a long time,â Sprig says, and then, checking herself, she asks politely, âWhen will Miss McKenna be home?â
Mr. Julius drums his fingers on the desk. âNot for another year. Actually fourteen months.â
âOh! Why is she going to be away so long?â
âLieutenant McKenna signed up for another tour,â Mr. Julius says. âShe felt it was her duty.â
âOh,â Sprig says again. Fourteen months! âMr. Julius.â She leans forward. âMaybe she can come home sooner. Maybe things will change there, and theyâll send her home.â
âThatâs a good thought, Sprig. Iâll hold on to it.â He looks up at the clock. âYou better go back to your desk now.â
As soon as she sits down, Sprig leans over to Bliss and whispers, âI told him about my dad being in Afghanistan. I was stupid to say anything! His girlfriend isnât going to be home for fourteen months. He probably hates me now.â
âOh, please! I do not agree!â Bliss grabs Sprigâs arm. âYou wanted to tell someone about your dad ââ
âWell, why didnât I just tell you?â
âBecause I already know, dodo! Maybe Mr. J. was happy to talk to someone about his girlfriend,â Bliss whispers. âI bet he was really glad someone else understands.â
âThatâs a good thought,â Sprig says. âIâll hold on to it.â
âP EOPLE!â Mr. Julius calls. âWill everyone please pay attention?â He raps on his desk. âRussell has an announcement to make. Bliss and Sprig, could you two quiet down? I know itâs Friday, but we need to stay on task, people. We still have work to cover today. Okay, Russell, youâre on.â
Russell pulls his shirt straight, clasps his hands, and bows. âYouâre all invited to a party at my house Sunday night, starting at five P.M .,â Russell says in his deep voice. âIn fact, the whole school is invited, âcause of my sister, Lara, whoâs in Sprigâs sisterâs class.â He points two fingers at Sprig, and everyone turns and looks at her. âItâs Laraâs birthday. Sheâs going to be thirteen. Thereâll be lots of food â stuff kids like, not real healthy stuff, so donât worry.â Everybody laughs, and Russell takes another bow. â My parents say be sure to tell your parents that my parents will both be present, so your parents donât think itâs some wild, unsupervised, party-animal thing.â More laughter. Another bow. âAnd youâre invited too, Mr. Julius.â
âThank you, Russell,â Mr. Julius says. âOkay, everybody ââ
âMr. Julius ââ Russell puts up his hand. âI have something else to say, okay?â
âAll right, Russell, but letâs make it snappy.â
âWell, besides being Laraâs birthday, itâs also a sort of winterfest party to celebrate the new year, thatâs what my dad says, even though itâs already February,
