I frown at my computer screen as a meeting notification flashes on the monitor. “Meeting with Carl: 3:00 p.m.” I don’t bother holding in my sigh of frustration. My coworker, Stacy, shoots me a warning look from across the aisle.
“Hey,” I say to her, trying to whisper. “If you’d just been passed over for a promotion for the third time, you’d be pissed too.” Forgive me if a meeting with management is the last thing I want to do right now.
Working at a travel agency that caters to the rich and famous sounds like a dream job, until you realize that you spend most of your time fantasizing about all the places you’re sending other people to. It pays the bills as long as you don’t care about having a social life; sixty-hour workweeks don’t leave a lot of room for relationships. I shake that thought from my mind. It’s just another thing to be depressed about. The frustrating thing is, men flirt with me all the time. They love my legs and curves. I just don’t get an opportunity to let them enjoy them. At only twenty-one, I have a long way to go before college loans are paid off, so I just need to suck it up.
As the clock ticks over to 3 p.m., I reluctantly get up from my desk and walk over to Carl’s office. He opens the door just as I reach for the brass knob. His cold, professional smile makes me crazy.
“Come on in, Amanda,” he says, indicating a lonely gray chair near his desk. He closes the door behind us.
We take our seats and remain in awkward silence as Carl’s eyes peruse a manila folder on his desk. I begin to think he’s forgotten about me when he looks up suddenly and gives me that smile again. God, I could just slap him.
“Great news, Amanda!” he says. “One of our best clients is booking quite an extensive trip as a gift for his son’s thirtieth birthday.” I try to hide the fact that I’m completely unimpressed by this fairly routine news. All our clients do is book elaborate trips.
Carl continues, “The itinerary is all set, but he wants someone from our office to give a presentation on the details of the trip. Get them excited—pumped up, you know?”
I put on a fake smile. All I can hear is, “more work for less pay.”
“And you want me to do the presentation?” I ask.
“Bingo!” he says, passing the folder to me. “He specifically requested our most beautiful employee. It’s all a part of the…experience. If you look good, we look good, you know.”
I do know, and I try to sound grateful. “Thank you for the opportunity.”
“No, no. Thank you, Amanda. There’s a sizable commission in it for you. All the details for the presentation time and date are in the folder. Good luck!”

That’s my signal to leave. As I stroll back to my cubicle I leaf through the folder. I read the name: Stewart West. The Stewart West? As in, Billion-Dollar Entertainment Mogul Stewart West? Holy crap. I had no idea he had a son. Pinned inside the file is a picture of client’s lucky son, Alexander. Lucky and to-die-for sexy. Some people have all the luck. No one I go to school with even comes close to this man’s sharp, imposing features. He’s dressed in a casual-looking T-shirt and expensive designer jeans. Perfectly kissable lips trace his pearly smile. His icy blue eyes stare up at me from the photo, and I suddenly feel like he can see me. I flush and shake my head. Get a hold of yourself, Amanda. Except, all I want is for him to get a hold of me. I’ve been single too long.
Maybe this won’t be so bad after all. It’s not a promotion, but at least I’ll be in the company of this stunning man for a few hours.

I stop in the hallway to examine myself in an enormous, gold-framed mirror. Where do people even buy things like this? The instructions in the folder had ordered me to dress in “formal allure.” I didn’t even know that was a thing; I had to look it up. Basically, it’s women’s business attire but just a little too short and tight here and
