reach was unavailable and suggested I try my call again later. I shrugged and hung up.
âNo answer,â I said to Belinda. She huffed out a dissatisfied breath and leaned back in her chair.
âWell, damn.â
My thoughts exactly. âSorry. It looks like we went to a lot of trouble for nothing.â
âNot nothing. You got your phone back.â
She glanced at the screen and her eyes widened. âIs that the time? Iâve got to run. Iâve got a client coming in for a reading.â
Out of her enormous bag Belinda produced a dark blue jacket, a colorful ski hat, and an extra-large Ziploc bag. She opened the bag and motioned for me to lean closer. With a few nimble plucks she removed the bobby pins holding my wig in place and moments later I was a brunette again.Belinda slid the wig, halo and all, into the bag and zipped it closed.
âAnyone who saw you going into the hotel as a blond angel wonât be looking for a subdued local. Trade.â She held out the jacket. I shrugged out of the one I was wearing and handed it to her.
âI have appointments the rest of this afternoon but if you need me you call me.â She handed me a business card and placed a set of keys on the table in front of me. She pointed one glitzy nail, first at one key, then the other. âCourtyard gate. Bike lock. The gate key also opens the side door into the kitchen.â
âThanks,â I said with a smile and a small headshake.
âWhat?â
âI was just thinking you deserve that halo.â
She waved the comment off. âPlease. Iâm only seventy-five percent angel sixty percent of the time. Oh, and take this.â She fished a card out of her purse and handed it to me.
âA parking pass?â
âThe lot is two blocks away from my place, on Dauphine.â
âWhy would I need a parking pass?â
âNo idea. But you will.â
âThe Tingle?â
She winked and her glitter-coated lashes flashed like diamonds.
âAlways listen to the Tingle.â
She turned to glide away through the crowd, graceful as any ballroom dancer. It made me wonder if people would ever stop surprising me.
The thought reminded me of Logan. I picked up the card heâd left in the package and studied it.
What was going on with him? What was his connection to Veronica? Had he done something to her? They were the same questions Iâd been asking myself since the day before. Not having any answers was becoming more frustrating by the minute.
Slipping the card back into the envelope, I tucked the package into the messenger bag Belinda had loaned me.
My phone began singing,
Oh, girls just wanna have fun!
And I snatched it off the table. âEmma?â
âHey! You didnât lose your phone after all. Did you forget to charge it?â
âItâs a long story. Is everything okay with you?â
âOf course. Why wouldnât it be?â
I picked up the slightest strain in her voice. âEmma, whatâs going on?â
âNothing.â
âEmââ
âDamn it. I was trying to surprise you.â
âWith?â
âWell, because you couldnât come to my birthday celebration, I thought Iâd come to you.â
âWhat?â
âYep! Weâre on the way.â
âWe? You have Moss with you?â
âAnd Hugh and Kai.â
âWhat?â I sputtered.
âSurprise! Donât worryâIâve already contacted the hotel. They can accommodate us and extend your stay.â
I was too shocked to speak for several seconds. Finally I managed to say, âEm, you canât go to the hotel.â
âWhy not?â
âItâs not safe.â
âOookay.â She drew out the word, then asked, âWhat am I missing here?â
âA lot. Listen, itâs too much to try to explain on the phone. But thereâs something fishy going on. I was being followed last night so I
