Reed, and kissed him.
Nathan watched Reed respond, hugging her close. He liked what he saw. He waited until they stopped kissing and Jeanie turned to him.
“I could show you around, but maybe we should tell you about our lives.”
Reed looked at him over Jeanie’s head. “That’s probably a good idea.”
Jeanie glanced from one to the other of them. She hesitated before she said, “It’s very dark in here, is this how you live all the time? I saw the little windows up under the eaves. You both hide in here, don’t you?”
Reed gave Nathan a forlorn look.
Nathan’s reckless attitude was the reason they lived this way now, and had done for a few years. He’d fought with Reed about flying and shifting where anyone might see. He’d taken chances and nearly brought catastrophe down on them a couple of times. He sighed.
“Come and sit down. Let me tell you.” He led her to the far end of the room where a big table took up most of the space, and where chairs were pushed under there. He pulled one out and brushed at the feathers on the seat. He looked up to see Jeanie watching him.
“Sorry, we need to give the place a clean. It somehow didn’t seem important until we met you. We’ll give the place a good clear out before you come to live with us.”
Jeanie’s expression, not exactly one of horror but close, filled him with fear.
She looked around at Reed and then back at him. “I can’t live here. I love you both, at least that’s how it feels, but I can’t live here. The darkness would depress me. The whole area is unkempt and sad. I’m sorry.”
She backed away toward the door.
Reed stopped her as he said, “Please , Jeanie, don’t leave. We’ll talk about this. We just assumed that you’d come here. It was inconsiderate. I bought those houses, along the road, and was going to move Nathan and me into one. We intended to clear this place away, demolish it because I’m so tired of living here, so I should have known you couldn’t.” He waved a hand in the direction of the road when talking about the houses then slumped.
Horror filled Nathan. He had no idea Reed felt so bad. Reed was always the calm one, always careful and thinking about the future. He sat down on the chair he’d pulled out for Jeanie, and looked down at his hands.
Jeanie came back to the table and to his surprise kissed his cheek. Then she went to Reed and hugged him. “I can’t bear to hear the sadness in your voice. Come and live with me, Reed.”
For a few seconds fear spiked through Nathan at the thought that she’d chosen Reed and was about to leave him out, but then, with her arm still around Reed’s waist, she turned back to him.
“I mean you , too, Nathan.”
He sprang out of the chair and a feather flew into the air, spiraling down onto the floorboards. Lightheaded with relief he rushed to kiss her. He held Jeanie’s waist and kissed her for a long time. Her arms went around his neck. The softness of her lips, the light fragrance of her hair, and the way she pressed her hips to his gave him an erection. He stopped kissing her to breathe, and then loosened his hold on her.
“The truth is I hate it here now , too. We can raze the place and sell the land.” He looked at Reed for agreement.
“We can do that.” Reed grinned at him.
Jeanie took them both by the hand.
“My place is big, but all your stuff might not fit.”
A rush of love for her flowed through Nathan. He glanced around. “This is all there is, the other rooms are empty, but there’s nothing here I want. Well, maybe a few clothes and my laptop for my work. What about you, Reed?”
Reed smiled. “ Right now, I only need Jeanie and you. I guess a few clothes are necessary, and my computer. Guess I still have to earn a living.”
“I took you away from your office, Jeanie, we should let you go now, but maybe we can see you later, to talk?” Nathan asked his voice full of tenderness.
She took a deep breath. “You are sure about all
