Sucking Bites (San Francisco Vampires Series #3)
relatively new infestation.”
“Hey, watch the infestation talk. I’m one of them now and I don’t want to be talked about like I’m a cockroach or something,” I say wearily.
I feel a familiar whoosh of warm air.
    “Aidan,” I say.
Everyone looks up. Why am I still the only one who can tell when he’s coming?
“Lilith, how are you feeling this afternoon?” he asks assessing me closely, ignoring Sebastian’s stony glare.
“Much better. We found out silver burns me, though,” I say showing him my burn mark.
It’s starting to heal. He touches the side of my face once and then steps back. His one touch says everything he can’t and I understand. So does everyone in the room. Hannah gives an uncomfortable little cough.
“Hello, Aidan, haven’t seen you in a while—Hades is missing his godfather. What have you been up to?” she asks.
“I visited Greece for a couple of weeks. It was beautiful,” he says turning to smile at her. “How have you been, Ganja Girl?”
    That is Hannah’s preferred, self-proclaimed super-heroine name.
“I’ve been good, you know. Dyed the hair purple. No one even commented. Of course I wasn’t bit by a werewolf, so I don’t exactly compare on the weird-o-meter.” Diel pulls Hannah into his side and kisses the top of her head, chuckling. I’m envious, her choice was simple. Once Hannah and Diel decided to hook up there was no looking back—demons tend to be that way.
“Hannah, your hair is gorgeous. It highlights your black nail polish,” I say.
    “Thanks, Lily,” Hannah says.
“Where did this happen, Lily?” Diel asks.
    “In Chinatown. I was hunting.”
“If you would just hunt with me in Berkeley, this kind of thing wouldn’t have happened to you,” Hannah says.
She had a point. The most dangerous thing that ever happens to her is her wardrobe. Right now she is wearing black converse tennis shoes with a jean mini and a vintage tee. She has a leather bracelet and a leather choker on.
“I like to live on the edge, Hannah, you know that,” I say dryly.
“Well you certainly do that. What happens now? Can we braid your back and will you breathe heavy?” Diel lets out a deep rumble of a laugh. Too close to my worries to be funny to me.
“Very funny! Julian doesn’t think I’ll get hairy. Other than that we don’t know.” I grab hand sanitizer and slather some on.
“I gotta be here for the next full moon. You guys have way too much fun.”
“This is serious, Hannah,” Sebastian says grimly, not caring for Hannah’s and my teasing.
“Oh, I know. But it’s still more exciting than anything I do,” she says, ignoring Sebastian’s grumpiness. Bad moods don’t scare Hannah.
Aidan and Helena laugh, even Sebastian smiles at her. It’s hard not to smile around Hannah. I’m not going to dwell on what’s going to happen to me until it gets closer to the next moon cycle. There is nothing I can do. Of course, being determined to do one thing means my OCD will drive me to focus on the opposite.
Hades walks over to me and sniffs my hand and then his eyes glow red. To say I’m creeped out is to put it mildly.
“Diel, what did your dog just do?” I ask nervously.
“He seems to have sensed the werewolf in you, Lily. I think he approves.”
Aidan steps up next to me just in case he needs to pop me out of here. He adores the dog but he loves me. I put a gentling hand on Aidan’s. I reach down and pat Hades on his coal black head. He opens his mouth in his typical hell hound grin and drools all over my hand. Aidan lets out a breath and I can feel his body relax next to me. Relieved, I look at the rest of the room.
“I have to work tonight and I want to get all those things I bought yesterday from your flat, Aidan.”
“Do you really think it is wise for you go into work, Cherie?” Sebastian asks casually, but his tone doesn’t fool me.
“I intend to continue to live my life as normally as possible, Bast.” Unconsciously my hand
