it.â
They quickly gathered their gear together, but when Dave said, âLetâs go,â Reb held up a hand. âWeâre not ready to leave yet.â
As usual, Dave didnât like to have his decisions questioned. âLook, Reb, weâve got to get on our way. Weâve got to make time.â
But Reb shook his head. âWhat are you planning to feed these babies, Dave?â
Dave opened his mouth to speak. He probably was about to say, âGoatâs milk,â but then realized what Reb was driving at. He said rather feebly, âWell, thereâll probably be other goats along the way.â
âWe canât be sure of that,â Reb said. âIâm going to play it safe. Iâm going to take along something for those kids to eat.â
âSo what are you going to do, Reb?â Wash had a worried look on his face.
Reb Jackson said, âI always despised horsethieves and cattle rustlers, but I guess Iâm gonna have to join their ranks.â
âWhat do you mean?â Jake asked.
âI mean weâve got to get some of those goats and take âem with us. We donât know how long weâll be on the trail, and we canât depend on finding any milk on the way. There ainât no supermarkets out here, you know, Dave.â
âWait a minute, yourself,â Dave said. âThose are not our goats!â
âThatâs what Iâm telling you, Dave. Iâm gonna rustle âem.â
A lively argument took place then. Some agreed with Reb that they would have to have fresh milk, but nobody really wanted to steal the goats.
At last Sarah said, âI know what we can do.â
âWhat?â Abbey asked.
âWe can leave payment for the goatsâand for the milk weâve taken, too.â
Reb turned to Meta. âWhat kind of money do people use here, Meta?â
âPeople here do not use money. We trade.â
Sarah said excitedly, âAll right, then. Letâs go through our things and find enough stuff to leave that would be the equivalent ofâhow many goats will we need?â
âI figure four,â Reb said. âJust to be on the safe side.â
âMeta, you do it. Take enough of our things to equal the value of four goats and all the milk.â
Meta hesitated, but at Sarahâs urging she finally said, âAll right.â
The Sleepers and Gus spread out their equipment. Meta went through everything and made her choices.
Only Dave protested. âThey canât have my magnifying glass! I can use it to start a fire!â
âLet her have it, Dave. Weâll start a fire with flintand steel,â Sarah said. âAnything to make the payment right.â
In the end, Reb took the items that Meta had selected and tied them up in a cloth. He put his bright red handkerchief at the top so that the bundle would be easily seen. Then he said, âIâll go to the clearing and leave this stuff. Which way you going, Dave?â
âThat way.â Dave pointed. âMeta says the pass is through the mountains.â
âThen you take on off,â Reb said.
âWhat about you?â Sarah asked. âHow will you find us?â
âIf I couldnât track a bunch like this, Iâd take down my sign!â Reb snorted. âNow get going. Iâll catch up sooner or later.â
âIâd better stay with you, Reb,â Gus said.
âAll right. I could use a little help. You could lead two of the critters. Letâs go, Gus.â
Â
Reb and Gus hiked through the woods to where the goats were. âStill donât see anybody around. Where should we leave this stuff?â Reb asked.
âI guess somewhere where the goats canât get at it and eat it. What about we hang it from the limb of that tree? The owners canât miss it there.â
âYou think theyâll figure out what happened?â
âTheyâll probably take the
