front of him on the table, he flipped through it briefly.
“It has been a bad night,” Renner summarized. “Hawk, as we have already stated, we’re convinced you are the primary target in all of this. Yet you don’t know what the reason for these acts is…other than someone possibly wanting to oust you from your position within the company and to somehow control the Disney empire.”
“I don’t know what they want.” Hawk leaned forward and placed his hands flat against the tabletop. “But I do want to know who they are.”
“I know.” Renner nodded. “And we will figure it out. You’re going to have a lot of security around you from this point forward. Last night, the black helicopter was able to get to you because we didn’t monitor the airspace around the property at a heightened security level. They surprised us. It will not happen again.”
Renner pointed toward Al Gann, who picked up the conversation and the debriefing for the group. “It was my mistake to let you get on that train last night. Here is what we have planned for you, Hawk: You are not going out anywhere in public. You will not be out and moving around as you please. When you do move, you will move with security—as a matter of fact, Douglas Hall or a member of his team is going to be with you around the clock. We will use misdirection and decoys like we did today. You go nowhere without letting us know. Got it?”
    “Yep, got it.” Hawk sighed.
“I want you to stay on property. Despite what happened last night, we can keep you safer here. However, since you are the target, we do not want you around guests. There is no need to expose others to potential danger. You can move around a bit more freely after areas of the resort close if you need to…so you won’t feel like a prisoner. I know how much you hate to be confined and to feel like you can’t participate and contribute.” Al smiled at Hawk. “And I do want you to do what you do best.”
A brief, uncomfortable silence hung in the air.
Renner wrinkled his brow. “I’m not sure I even know what that means. But I expect you to stay out of trouble and cooperate fully with us.”
The investigator got up and motioned for the officers to exit. Al Gann followed suit and moved toward the door. Douglas indicated to Hawk by pointing that he would be right outside. Hawk nodded, and the door silently clicked shut, leaving the five friends alone for the first time since the night Farren was shot and killed.
“Someone tried to assassinate you last night from an unmarked black helicopter!” Kate blurted out. “This isn’t about someone trying to take over an entertainment empire or someone upset because Walt Disney designed a contingency plan for a new leader to emerge long after he was gone…this is about something far more serious and bigger”—she raised her eyebrows—“if the other stuff wasn’t big enough.”
Juliette nodded her agreement. “Hawk, do you know how close you were to not being in this room right now?”
“I do.” Hawk sighed again. “It was surreal. I was talking with George”—he swallowed hard—“about Farren dying, and then out of nowhere we were under attack. It was happening so fast, I couldn’t get my mind focused on what to do quick enough.”
“Hey.” Kate reached across and placed a comforting hand on his arm. “There was nothing you could have done fast enough to save George. Whoever is doing this is to blame. But Hawk, with your past few years here at Disney, you have to know that there’s something huge happening right now.”
Jonathan leaned back in his chair. “And you’re going to have to figure it out.”
“And not get yourself or us killed along the way.” Shep shook his head, engulfed in the enormity of the past twenty-four hours.
Juliette leaned in closer to the table and lowered her voice. “What did George tell you, Hawk?”
“He wanted to help me, but he didn’t really know anything.”
    “If he didn’t
