Hilden shook her head with astonished denial, and then her mouth thinned with determination. âThis is some kind of cruel joke. Sheâs here somewhere. I told you, I saw her.â
âIt was a doppelganger, Gayla,â Artemisia said. âI saw it too. But it expired when we looked too closely.â
A female uniformed officer came over carrying a tiny, shivering Chihuahua puppy, the tail tucked firmly between its legs, its ears laid flat with terror.
âNo.â All the blood drained from the Dominaâs face. âNot Tiffany.â
McManus waved the officer away. A man approached with a woman who looked like a younger version of the Domina.
âMother, whatâs going on?â she asked.
âMarcus, take Astrid up to the room,â the Domina commanded.
âNo,â the younger woman said. âTell me whatâs happened.â
The Dominaâs face fell. âThereâs been an accident.â
Bianca tried to school her features into a neutral expression but failed. It was definitely not an accident that had killed Tiffany Hilden.
Astrid Hildenâs eyes widened as she saw the puppy the policewoman carried away and her expression crumpled. âThatâs Tiffanyâs Chi-Chi? Whereâs my baby?â
The Domina took her daughterâs hand. âGo upstairs with Marcus, Astrid. Iâll be along shortly.â
âNo, Mother, I need to know.â Astridâs voice rose an octave, hysteria creeping in. âWhere is my baby?â
The blood had drained from Marcusâs face. Something passed between him and his mother-in-law as he placed his arms around his wifeâs shoulders. âCome on, sweetheart, letâs go upstairs.â
She wrenched herself out of his embrace and stood shaking. âTell me now.â She screamed. The whole room stopped and looked their way.
âIâm sorry,â Gayla said. âSheâs gone.â
âNo.â It was hardly more than a hushed breath. âNo, not my baby. Not my little girl.â
Marcus wrapped his arms around his panic-stricken wife again, but she fought him, beating him with both fists until she collapsed, burying her face against his chest as heart-wrenching sobs wracked her body.
Cody appeared out of nowhere at that minute. âOberon said you might need some help.â
âPerfect timing,â Bianca said with relief.
He approached the Domina but she waved him off. âDonât worry about me, Incubus, just take care of my daughter.â She turned to McManus with a stony expression. âSo what are you doing to find my granddaughterâs murderer?â
âFirst, weâre going to get statements from your guests,â McManus said, and turned to signal one of several police officers arriving at the entrance. âAnd if you donât mind, Iâd like to start by asking you a few questions. When was your granddaughter due?â
The Dominaâs brow creased. âDue?â
âAh, McManus . . .â Bianca said, shaking her head. He didnât know.
He just ignored her, bumbling on. âThe baby,â he said. âWhen was the baby due?â
The Dominaâs brow creased deeper in confusion. âIâm sorry, I donât understand.â
âNo, Iâm sorry, Your Eminence, I shouldâve explained,â Bianca said. âTiffany was killed for the fetus she carried inside. They took the baby.â
âImpossible,â the Domina said. âThere was no baby. I told you, she passed her entrance exams to the Isis Institute.â
âI know,â Bianca said.
âThen, can someone please fill me in?â McManus asked.
Bianca sighed and turned to him. âIt means this morningâon the dawn of her sixteenth birthdayâTiffany Hilden was certified as a virgin.â
