this place,â explained Marta. âShe was convinced this place was a doorway â you know, her way out of the coma.â
âYou think I needed to come to this exact spot to wake up?â asked Alfonso with a chortle. âCome on, really?â
âDidnât you say, âI feel like Iâve been here before?ââ asked Marta.
Alfonso looked off into the distance and stared again at the tower â or whatever it was. The sight of it gave him an uneasy feeling. He felt increasingly certain that he had dreamt of the place, but he couldnât recall any of the details of the dream.
âSo whatâs the plan?â asked Alfonso.
Marta reached into her shirt and took a Pendant embedded with a number of emeralds. It was what the Abbot had given her.
âWhatâs that?â asked Alfonso.
âOur way home,â replied Marta.
âHome?â
âBack to Jasber,â said Marta. âI got it from the Abbot. We just need to burn it and theyâll come looking for us â the sweepers â theyâll find us.â
âNo way,â said Alfonso. âForget it.â That was the last thing that he wanted to do right now. âThese are the same people who locked away my dad in the middle of a labyrinth for years â the same people who kept you locked up in a monastery where you had to sit in a chair all day and stare at a tree. Have you forgotten all that? You want to go back there? Are you crazy?â
âMy mom and dad and brothers are there,â said Marta. âBesides, Iâm done being seer. I plan to quit.â
âAnd you think theyâll let you?â asked Alfonso. âMarta, be honest with yourself.â
âIâm the seer,â she said stubbornly. âThey need me. Weâll make a deal or something.â
âLook,â said Alfonso. âIf thatâs what you want to do, Iâm not going to stop you, but Iâm not coming with you.â
Marta studied her Pendant carefully. She appeared lost in thought, as if trying to make up her mind.
âYouâre not going to make it without me,â she said finally.
âLook, I appreciate all that youâve done for me, I really do,â said Alfonso. âBut I think I can survive without the help of a nine-year-old pipsqueak.â
âStand up!â said Marta. It wasnât a request â it was an order.
âWhat?â
âYou heard me â stand up!â
âFine,â said Alfonso. With great effort, he rose to his feet. He felt weak and unsteady. âIâm standing,â declared Alfonso. âOkay?â
âWalk forward ten paces,â ordered Marta.
âYes boss,â said Alfonso. He took one step forward and then another. His legs ached and his balance was off, but he managed. He took three or four more steps and then, rather abruptly, he felt exhausted. He could go no farther. He dropped to one knee and, as he did, a spasm of pain shot up his leg. He grabbed his thigh and felt that his muscles had dissipated and his skin was soft and saggy. âMy legs... Iâm an...â He stopped mid-sentence â his voice sounded like the croak of a frog.
âA very old man,â finished Marta. She couldnât suppress a hint of satisfaction in her voice. âNinety five, maybe ninety-eight. Youâre a regular grandpa â probably even a great grandpa.â
âWhat do I do?â croaked Alfonso and, as he spoke, he became aware of the fact that he no longer had any teeth in his mouth. âTell me.â
âThat all depends,â said Marta. âHow old do you want to be?â
âMy real age,â croaked Alfonso.
âNo,â said Marta. âIâve already shown you how to do that. Why donât you try for thirty-six?â
âThirty-six?â
âYes,â said Marta with a smile. âItâs a lucky number.â
âFine, thirty-six then,
