wasnât easy being a bivocational shepherd, and in a small town like this it was hard to know what was confidential and what was common knowledge. Nick would be beating himself up for days.
âSo is Celia in jail?â
Dan decided to speak up, for he had talked to Jill earlier and knew they had let her go. âNo, sheâs not in jail. Donât go getting all excited about this. They just questioned her about it. But thereâs no evidence that she knew a thing about it. Jillâs got them testing his coffee cup at work and taking food samples from the cafe he stopped at on his way out of town yesterday, and sheâs even got them searching Celiaâs parentsâ house in Jackson since Stan was there yesterday.â
George sat slowly down in his seat. âYou know, I gotta say I waked up moreân once durinâ the night thinkinâ how she knowed it was arsenic. How did she know?â
There was dead silence from Nick, Dan, and Mark. Finally, Mark spoke up. âItâs probably going to hit the paper tonight,â he said. âSo Iâll tell yâall, but I expect you to keep it under your hats. Got it?â
They all agreed.
âIt turns out Celia was married before, and her first husband was poisoned to death. Arsenic. Now, that doesnât meanââ
âShe killed her first husband?â George asked on a whisper.
âNo!â Dan said. âSee what youâve done, Mark? She was acquitted.â
âDid Stan know about this?â Slater asked.
âShe said he did,â Mark told him.
âCourse, we wonât know for sure till he wakes up,â Slater pointed out.
âLook what youâre doing!â Dan got up, angry. âYou guys know Celia. You know she wouldnât do a thing like that. Already youâre doubting her.â
âDan, what we really know about her?â the big Cajun asked. âArrybody knows she ainât been in town that long.â
âSheâs been here longer than you have! What do you want?â
âBut I growed up here,â George defended. âI knew most arrybody.â
âAnd she came so mysteriously,â Slater added. âNobody knew nothinâ about her except that she was Aggieâs niece.â
âThat was enough! We all know and trust Aunt Aggie. And besides, Celia was a sweet, soft-spoken, gentle woman, and most of us liked her instantly.â
âThat had a lot to do with the fact that sheâs one of the prettiest gals in town,â Slater said. âBut for all we know, she could have been a cold-blooded murderer with a pretty face. For all Stan knew, either. And now look at âim.â
Nick intervened. âGuys, please. You canât burn her at the stake before you even hear all the facts. Celiaâs got a sweet heart, and it isnât capable of murder. You know it, and I know it.â
âDoesnât matter,â Dan said bitterly. âIt makes juicy gossip, so theyâre going to run with it. If she gets hurt in the process, who cares, right, Slater?â
Slater swung around, red faced. âYeah, Nichols? I guess youâre just feelinâ all superior because you had inside knowledge. Is Jill representinâ her?â
âAs a matter of fact she is. And I donât have inside knowledge. I just happened to be outside last night when Celia was brought in. I knew better than to say anything.â
âCome on,â Nick said in a sterner voice. âThatâs enough. We donât need this!â He turned to George, then to Mark and Dan, members of his church, all of whom seemed to be seething for one reason or another. âCelia is our sister. Sheâs part of our congregation. She needs our prayers, not our indictments.â
âThen she has been indicted?â Slater asked.
Dan wanted to hit him. âNo, you fool, she hasnât , so why donât you just keep your mouth shut about
