higher, one lower. âYou donât know my family,â he rumbled. âTheyâd go nuts worrying. They know what I do and they know itâs sometimes dangerous. The fewer details theyâre aware of, the better.â
Luna sighed. âThatâs nice.â
Pausing in his seduction, Joe bent around to see her face. âNice?â
âTo have family like that, I mean. To worry about you. To . . . care.â
Temporarily sidetracked, Joe propped his chin on top of her head. Heâd never before realized how short Luna was in comparison to his six feet, three inches. He guessed her to be around five-six, but she had such a presence about her, heâd always thought her taller. âYou donât?â
âNo, not really.â As if catching herself, she turned in his arms and gave him a chiding shake of her head. âLook at you, trying to work your moves when you can barely stand up.â
âHey, Iâm up.â He looked at her mouth. âIn more ways than one.â
She fought a smile. âI thought we werenât going to talk about that.â
âNot then.â Pressing into her so that she couldnât miss his rising erection, he murmured, âBut now . . .â
âNo.â She flattened her hands on his chest and stared up at him. She had the most beautiful caramel-colored eyes, lightened with glowing gold flecks. âWe have to finish talking about your background check.â
A frown replaced his grin. âOh, yeah. Iâm pissed about that.â
âDo you have a criminal record?â
He considered swatting her for that impudent question. âOf course not. I used to be a cop, remember? I got picked up a few times, but that was justââ
âYouâve been arrested?â She went wide-eyed in shock again, then shook her head as if she expected no better.
Joe locked his jaw. âSometimes in the thick of things, itâs tough to see whoâs the good guy and whoâs the bad.â
She gave him a cynical look. âAnd you like to blur the edges?â
âSometimes.â He rolled one shoulder. âPolice have to be cautious. So Iâve been hauled in a time or two, but Iâve always been released.â
She slid away from him and moved to the other side of the table. âSo thereâs nothing to worry about, right? Youâve never been arrested, so you have nothing to hide.â
âI didnât say that.â
She clutched the chair in front of her. âSo you do have something to hide?â Annoyance clouded her eyes. âIf they reject you, then that means Iâll have to go alone. I might as well leave now instead of wasting time waiting for you.â
His molars would be dust by the time they finished this tooth-grinding conversation. âYouâre not going without me.â
âWanna bet?â She started to pace again.
Joe caught her arm when she neared him. âIâll pass, all right? They might frown over my job, but itâs legit. That still doesnât give you the right to go snoopingââ
âWhat exactly is your job? I know you used to be a cop, then a bounty hunter.â
âIâve done a lot of things,â he said evasively, knowing heâd walked the gray areas more than once. âPrivate detective work, bouncer. Right now I hire out as a bodyguard.â
âA bodyguard? For who?â
âAnyone who needs protection.â All this gabbing got to him, so he turned to leave the room. âMind if we finish this conversation in bed? Iâm about shot.â
âOh, of course not.â She hustled along with him, reaching the bed first to turn down the sheets so he could crawl right in. âIs that better?â
âItâd be better if you joined me.â
âItâd kill you if I joined you.â
Joe laughed. âBragging about your skill in the sack? Damn, no need to build the anticipation,
