“Holy smokes, this is amazing! I can’t believe you can harness an echo!”
I crinkle my eyebrows in confusion. “Harness a what ?”
Hannah exhales in frustration. “A magic echo. It’s when you snatch the remnants of someone else’s magic they just expressed and use it for yourself,” she answers. “No one has been able to do that for centuries!”
I shrug in complete bewilderment. This magic echo ability might just be the thing I need to escape from this hellhole.
“Okay, we need a plan and I have just the thing…” Hannah begins before abruptly closing her mouth.
The sound of my cell door unlocking forces silence into the room. Hannah releases the bars and sprints over to her empty cot. She throws herself in bed, facing her back to me, pretending to be asleep. Corrah follows her lead, only she hides her entire body under the sheet. Thanks, guys . My door flings wide open as Micah enters without hesitation. His emerald eyes glow when he stops in what little light there is in the room.
“Time to go, love,” he says in a low voice, extending his broad hand for me.
I shudder inwardly at the thought of touching him befo re remembering what Hannah said. Pretend . I slide my hand into his, trying my best not to recoil. He leads me through the door, which one of his minions locks behind us. He makes a left, heading into a dim hallway. The blazing fires from the lit torches dance on the wall eagerly. A knot forms in my stomach at the thought of where we might be going. Micah pulls me sharply until I’m walking directly beside him. I feel his gaze penetrating me as we continue to stroll in silence.
“Since you won’t ask, I’ll let you in on a little secret,” he offers. “I’m taking you to our Seeker Chamber where you’ll stay until you find the location of The Scholars and the book for me.”
Seeker Chamber? Sounds fancy. I roll my eyes, knowing from this point forward, Micah will find creative ways to torture me. I refuse to lead him anywhere near them, but I need to be smart enough to buy myself some much-needed time. He stops, turning towards the tunnel wall. He presses his burly hands on the rock, chanting a spell in Latin. The wall glows in a jewel-colored purple hue, before an oak-paneled door appears. It absolutely wasn’t there before. Its features are that of an ordinary door, but nothing is ordinary in the world of magic. We step closer, and an uninviting vibe throbs in the center of it, warning me to turn around. The hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up as a shiver hikes down my spine. Micah grips my upper arm, pulling me into him.
“You remember what portal travel feels like, right, my love?”
I gesture a quick yes with the nod of my head, remembering exactly how it makes me feel: dizzy and nauseated. Micah slides me in front of him, wrapping his arms around me. He reaches for the handle, pushing down on the lever. The door screams as it swings open.
“Off we go,” he whispers into my ear.
He pushes us near the empty, black hole. My heart thuds in my chest, unsure of where we will end up. The portal sucks us in without remorse and the mounting wooziness plies itself in layers upon me. My stomach clenches, warning me I’m going to puke until my back slams onto the stiff ground. My ribs squeeze together, knocking the wind clear out of my lungs. I guzzle pockets of air into them, attempting to ease my choking on the pain. I roll over onto my side, gently hoisting myself up with my elbow. The plush carpet of grass below me softens under every movement. I scan the landscape, noticing two rows of cleverly planted, stunning Live Oaks. Their branches gracefully dip and spread low across the lawn, far away from their trunks. I rotate my head, allowing my eyes to rest on a massive, Greek-inspired, antebellum plantation home. It sits elegantly at the very end of the tree-lined pathway. Holy shit! This is the same home from my nightmare! On instinct, I swing my head around
