he also sees the thing between Milo and me and he doesnât find it funny at all.
âEight grand,â Milo says, waiting for my response.
I blink. Thatâs a lot of money. I have itâIâve been stockpiling cash for a couple years now in case Lily and I had to run. I just . . . âFine.â
âGood.â Milo scribbles something down on a notepad and, ripping the page off, hands it to me. âWire it to this info. You donât show up when I call, I part the machine out, understand?â
âYeah.â I start to go and Milo jumps up.
âIâll walk you out.â
âThink we can find the way,â Griff says, and thereâs something threaded underneath his tone that makes me pause.
It makes Milo laugh. He follows us and weâre almost to the door when I notice the low-slung table near the wall. It looks like computers come there to die. Thereâs a soldering gun in one corner and parts are strewn everywhere, some of them snapped into pieces . . . except for a black box smaller than my fingertip.
âWhatâs this?â
âSniffer.â Milo passes it to me and, even though I donât want to be, Iâm impressed.
I fit the sniffer against my palm, testing the weight. âDid you make it?â
âLike duh.â Milo rolls his eyes and plucks the transmitter from my hand. âItâs specifically designed for BlackBerrys. You pop off the bottom of the handsetâs charging station, attach this baby, and away you go. It copies me on emails, internet usage, texts.â
My heart bumps into my throat. Itâs perfect. This could get me close to Bay without actually getting close to Bay.
Only itâs not perfect because Iâd have to get my hands on Bayâs BlackBerry charger.
âDoes it work?â I ask.
âOf course it works.â Milo turns over the transmitter, pokes it with one finger. âWell, it should work. I havenât had a chance to test it. Everyone I know has either iPhones or Androids. I need to get close to a BlackBerry user.â
Again, the proximity problem. I look at Griff, feel the familiar squeeze deep in my chest.
âHow much?â I ask.
Miloâs face wrinkles in confusion. âFor this? Itâs not for sale. Iâm trying to figure out how to scare BlackBerry so they buy the patent from me.â
âWhat better way to do that than by showing them it actually works?â
Milo goes still. âA thousand.â
âYouâre high.â
âIf only.â Milo shrugs. âSix hundred.â
âIâm already buying an entire system from you.â
He smiles. âFive.â
I stare at him, waiting, and Milo smiles wider. âFine.â He drops it in a plastic baggie and tosses it to me. âItâs freeâonly because I like you and I want details of how well it works.â
â If it works.â
â When it works.â
Outside thereâs a crack of thunder and the lights flicker once, kick-starting the low hum of generators in some other room. We must have lost power.
âStormâs getting worse,â Griff says. Heâs watching us without meeting my eyes. âLetâs go before the Mini ends up floating.â
âOkay.â I follow him, and Milo trails after me. The rainâs coming down in sheets now and Griff takes my keys, promising to drive my car close so I can duck in without getting totally drenched. I start to say it doesnât matter and I donât mind, but heâs already off and running.
âSo sweet,â Milo says as Griff sprints through the rain.
Yeah, he is. I want to smile and try not to. Even though Iâve only known Milo less than an hour, I can already tell heâll wreck the nice gesture. Sometimes Griff treats me like Iâm breakableâsomething I should hate. When itâs Griff doing it though I just end up feeling special.
