as if he canât bear to stop touching me.
âIâm worried,â he murmurs against my head.
âDonât,â I say, backing away.
âWe have to talk about this. Iâm leaving. Hopefully Iâll be backââ
I touch my finger to his lips. âYou will be. Itâll be like youâre just leaving the room. I probably wonât notice youâre gone.â
He gives me a look. âEvie.â
âWe should probably plan your trip though. Find the fastest and safest way there and back.â
âEvie!â His voice is filled with frustration, but I hear his footsteps following me and thatâs all I need. For now.
âHurry. Weâll need to make sure youâre all packed and have a solid plan.â I frown as I step into the main Caverns. Where would I find a map of the Outlands down here?
Gavin grabs my arm and pulls, stopping me in my tracks. âEvie! Stop.â
I turn. âIâm not saying it.â
âYouâre being ridiculous.â
âMaybe, but Iâm not going to say it.â
âFor Godâs sake, Evie! Iâm leaving for the Surface. Just fucking say good-bye!â
The whole time heâs talking, panic creeps into me. The fear Iâve been trying so hard to push down, so I can let him go and do this, pushes on me from all sides, making it almost impossible to breathe. I shake him off and continue walking toward the cutout.
âSo youâre not even going to say good-bye?â
âI told you, itâs not good-bye. Itâs as simple as you walking into the next room. I wouldnât say good-bye if you were going to the next room.â I almost choke on the words, as tears catch in my throat and I shove them down where he canât see them.
âI donât believe this,â he mutters.
I press my lips together and continue straight into the cutout where Asher is sitting up in bed, shirtless and pressing on the spot he was injured.
âHey! Look!â he says. âTheyâre not even sore. Itâs like nothingââ He stops when he sees me. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWe need a map of the Outlands. Weâre going to need to plan out Gavinâs trip to Rushlake,â I say.
Asher lifts an eyebrow. âO-okay. But we left it at Evangelineâsâ¦â
Of course we did. Why would I think heâd have that here? Weâve been at Evangelineâs the last month. Tears immediately burn my eyes. âWell, weâre going to have to get it. Iâll find Nadia.â I start out the doorway, but Gavin stands in my way. âPlease move.â
âI donât need a map. I know how to get there.â
I swallow. My body starts to tremble, but I clench my fists and try to hold it together. âThen weâll just need to come up with a plan to get you in.â
âHe doesnât need to get in. He just needs the guards at the gate to get my grandma. Heâll probably have to bribe them, but thatâs easily taken care of.â Asher slips the watch off his wrist and holds it out to Gavin. âThis should do it.â
I can feel him staring at me as Gavin takes it without taking his eyes off me. âThanks.â
âYouâll need food,â I say quietly.
âIâll stop by my house. The less I take with me from here, the easier it will be to leave.â
âWe need to get Father.â
âHeâs back,â Asher pipes up. âHeâs with Dr. Moreau.â
âActually, Iâm right here,â Father says from the doorway behind Gavin.
âWell, thatâs just great then. I guess youâre all ready to go.â My voice catches and I almost lose control of myself as I think of all the things heâs going to have to do.
I think Iâm going to be sick.
âDamn it, Evie. Just say it! Iâm leaving! Through Sector Three, which has twice proven it wants to kill us. If I make it
