but. . . he didn’t care.
Lorelei was
pushing the ship just hard enough to reach escape velocity. Their ship was much
more powerful than most Colonial and Trillond starships of the same size
category. It could easily be traveling at twice the speed and be an even
smoother ride but they didn’t want to create any problems for the people on the
ground or get the local government upset with them.
They cleared
the atmosphere, expecting the dark of space, stars and that feeling of how
small you are in the vast black. It was not as expected but not a big surprise.
There was a full-fledged space battle going on between the Warhammer and four
other ships. Laser fire lit up the screens as it shot through space and danced
on the shields.
"Power up our weapons,
Andrea," E'Aria ordered. "Lorelei, cut the engines to a quarter
thrust. Let's ease into to this."
Chapter 7
"What the
hell!" Andrea let fly. Did they just shoot at us?"
"Andrea,
target the weapons turrets and engines of both the Corvettes. That will give
Captain O'Shaughnessy a chance to concentrate on the others."
"Belay
that order, Andrea. We can't fire on any of those ships unless fired upon
first," Alona spoke, walking on the bridge with the senator in tow.
"This ship has diplomatic status and we cannot act as an aggressor."
"You! Do
not give orders to my crew. Is that understood?" E’Aria yelled, as she
rose from her seat.
"Yes
Captain, I just wanted to stop a potential nightmare and possible war,"
the Prime Minister responded.
Lorelei had not
been told to do anything by anyone as she let the ship continue to get very
close to the action.
"Lorelei,
full stop and take a defensive position," E'Aria ordered.
"Captain
E’Aria, there is a Captain Mahajan who says he needs to talk to you. He is from
the CNS Mace. Oh wait, hold on." Natalia laughed, punching the com.
"Captain
Mahajan, she is busy arguing with her Aunt Alona. Can you hold on just a minute
and while you are waiting, can you stop shooting your weapons at Captain
Aisling’s ship please? She is the best captain in all the Navy and it’s not
really nice of you to do that."
"Excuse
me, do you know her?" Captain Mahajan asked.
"Oh yes, I
know her and as my dad says, don’t make her mad or she will kick your
ass." Natalia turned to find everyone looking at her. She turned back
quickly to her console.
"Captain
Mahajan, Captain Aok is available now." The view screen came on to a dark-haired
handsome man with graying temples. His uniform was perfect as he stood next to
his captain's chair.
"Captain
Aok, are the rest of your crew as interesting as the one I just had the
pleasure of talking too?" he asked.
"You have
no idea, Captain. Now, what can I help you with?"
"Your
intentions, Captain. That’s what I want to know."
"We are
traveling under a writ signed by the King of Trillond and the President of the
Alliance granting us diplomatic status. I am transferring it to you now."
Ben walked on
the bridge and stood behind E’Aria. He had put his armor on, not because he
thought he would need it but it had great visual effect. Captain Mahajan eyes
became a little wider for a second. That is what Ben was looking for.
"Captain
Mahajan, would I be correct in assuming you have a member of M.I. aboard your
ship and involved in directing you to the situation you find yourself faced
with?" E'Aria asked. The captain didn’t answer. He looked to his right at
someone out of the picture, then turned back.
"Were you
told, Captain Mahajan, that Captain O’Shaughnessy, as well as others, were
making up a story to cover their asses about an invasion? That is, by the way,
why we are leaving, to go work out details in hopes of preventing the phantom
invasion if you believe M.I."
Captain Mahajan
seemed to be unwilling to answer.
"Our
intentions are to assist Captain O'Shaughnessy. Do you have anything further
you wish to ask?"
While the
captains and spooks had been conversing, Lorelei eased the Claymore
