at the drive-in. “What are we doing here, Mark?” she asked as she pressed on her temples with her fingertips.
“First, I’m getting you something to drink so you can take a couple of aspirin. The way you’re squinting your eyes, it looks like your headache is getting worse. Then, we’re going to talk about what happened back at the bar.” The carhop came over and took their order for a couple of sodas.
Turning his attention back to the woman next to him, Mark massaged Ragan’s neck and shoulder muscles firmly. She relaxed into his touch, her focus on avoiding outright tears at the situation. Sensing her emotional state, he pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to her. “Let it go, Ragan. You have every right. Then we can discuss what you need to do next.”
That’s all it took and she immediately turned around to face him, sobbing on his shoulder. She tried to stifle the sound of her blubbering when the carhop returned with their drinks, to no avail. Mark handed her a couple of aspirin when the sniffling tapered off.
After she swallowed the pills and blew her nose, Mark faced her with a serious expression. “You still love Adam, huh? I could see it on your face while you were watching him sing.”
“You saw that?” She fumbled with the handkerchief in her hands, then softly admitted, “I never stopped loving him.” She pulled down the visor and peered into the mirror as she wiped the mascara from under her eyes, stalling about how much to tell Mark. Flipping the visor back up, she said quietly, “I’m sorry if it seems like I led you on. I never meant for that to happen.”
“It’s okay. I’ll just have to work a little harder, won’t I,” he smiled and brushed a stray hair off her face. “I’m not giving up that easy.”
Another tear escaped. “He probably hates me. I don’t really blame him.”
“Tell me why, Ragan. Why didn’t you tell Adam about Skylar?”
“You may not believe me, but here’s the truth.” She told him about what Cassie and Logan went through and why it brought Adam to Fairfield Corners, and how she and Adam fell in love while helping Cassie during Logan’s convalescence. Next, she shared the same story she had given Cassie; about how she left in the middle of the night with no explanation because of the hurt of learning about Adam’s ex-wife and daughter.
When she reached the scene in the bar, her attention turned back towards the handkerchief in her hands while she tried to forget the look on Adam’s face when he found out about Sky. “Thank you, Mark. How is it that no one has snatched you up yet? You’re a young, handsome doctor; every girl’s dream.”
“Simple. I’ve never found the right one. Maybe I have tonight.” He kissed her forehead before straightening in his seat to start the car.
Unable to resist his simple charm, she put her hand over his on the steering wheel and leaned into his side. “I hope so.”
After dropping Ragan off at her parent’s house, Mark drove out to the quarry. While growing up in the area, the quarry had been the place to hang out in the summer. No matter what the air temperature, the water always felt cool and refreshing, drawing kids from around the county. He sat, leaning against a rock and tossing pebbles into the water, thinking about the events of the evening. He understood that Ragan thought she still loved Adam, but he knew he could change her mind if she gave him a chance.
As he listened to the pebbles sprinkle onto the surface, he tried to think of ways he could get the woman of his dreams to fall in love with him. Eventually, she would realize what was right in front of her. I can do this. I can be there for her. I’ll start slow, and eventually she’ll see me as more than just a friend…

    Chapter 15

Early the next morning, Ragan snuggled under the covers after she awoke and enjoyed the silence. According to the note she found on the counter when she finally ventured out for coffee,
