him her entire being was reduced to a mere puddle. Her mouth begged her to tell him to kick rocks, but the pull he had on her heartstrings triumphed and she found herself saying, “Okay.”
In a daze, McKinley boarded the elevator with Jamil in silence. She was all prepared to say fuck him and to start moving on with her life. But just like every other time she was ready to take that step into the unknown, Jamil appeared, causing her to steer off course. Outside the cool night air kissed their skin as they walked side by side down the street.
“ So what do you wanna talk to me about?” McKinley said at once.
“ I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry. I know that I haven’t treated you right, but I’m tryin’, McKinley. I love you and I don’t wanna lose you.”
“ I can’t tell. I haven’t heard from you in two weeks,” McKinley said simply.
“ And by no means necessary do I want you to think that was easy for me. I’m fucked up by this, too. I haven’t been able to sleep at night,” he confessed.
“ Well, how come when I called you, you didn’t answer the phone?” she countered.
“ I mean, what was I gon’ say? What I did was fucked up and nothin’ I said was gon’ make you feel any better, so I just decided to fall back for a minute.”
McKinley took in his words and let them digest in her brain. She desperately wanted to believe what he was telling her, but she’d heard this same speech one too many times before to trust in his word.
“ So what now?” she asked, walking at a slow pace.
“ If you allow me the chance, I wanna show you that I can be everything you need me to be and more,” Jamil said after a pause.
McKinley closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. She’d prayed to God repeatedly to stop the nagging pain that lay in the center of her chest. Now was her chance to end it. This was it, after this, Jamil would get no more chances. If he didn’t get it right this time then she was done for good.
“ I’ll give you another chance, but if you don’t do right by me this time, I’m done,” she said with a sudden fierceness.
“ I swear to God , this time it’s gon’ be different,” Jamil assured, smoothing back her hair.
McKinley relished his touch and said a silent prayer to God that this time the desires of her heart would come to fruition.
XoXo
It was the middle of summer and McKinley was on cloud nine. She and Jamil had been getting along tremendously. They hadn’t fought one time. Jamil had been on his best behavior.
He’d become more attentive. He catered to her every whim. Whatever free time he had to spare when he wasn’t working was spent with her. He’d even been assisting with the wedding plans.
Two hundred and fifty of their closest family and friends would attend their nuptials. Their wedding date had been set for September 8. McKinley couldn’t wait to become Mrs. Jamil Thompson. Her first duty as his wife would be to give him the son that he’d always wanted. That day after meeting with their wedding planner and going over table settings and centerpieces, McKinley hopped into her Mercedes G Wagon and headed back home to meet up with Jamil.
They were going to go over the seating chart. It had been hell trying to figure out where to seat everyone. As McKinley pulled up to her building, her cell phone began to ring. It was Jamil. A huge smile spread across her face.
“ Hey, baby,” she said, parking her car.
“ Where you at?” he asked.
“ Just pulling up to the house, why? Where are you?” she asked, turning off the ignition.
“ Please don’t be mad, but I’m runnin’ a lil bit behind.”
“ How behind, Jamil?” McKinley groaned.
“ Like an hour.”
“ Are you kidding me? I just rushed home, thinkin’ I was gon’ meet you here.”
“ My bad. I’ma be there as soon as I can,” he promised.
“ Okay, Jamil, hurry
