Christian?â Tony teased as he pushed Jimmy once more.
Tonyâs remark wouldnât have been so stinging if Jimmy hadnât felt like cryingâbut he did. Tony was supposed to be his best friend, and it made no sense that he would act like this.
Jimmy then did the one thing he never thought heâd do. He looked straight into Tonyâs face, with its twisted smirk and defiant eyes⦠and punched him in the nose.
Tonyâs expression of surprise burned itself into Jimmyâs memory, but no more so than the way Tony staggered backward, tripped over Brad, who was trying to stand up, and fell flat on his backside.
The image stayed on Jimmyâs mind even as Mr. Parks grabbed his arm and led him to the principalâs office.
âWhat did you think you were doing?â George Barclay asked Jimmy as they drove home from the school half an hour later. âIs that your way of bringing people to Jesusâby punching them in the nose?â
âHe was teasing me, Dad. Heâs been teasing me ever since I told him I was a Christian,â Jimmy complained.
âSo let him tease you. Who cares what he thinks?â George said.
âI do. Heâs supposed to be my best friend. Whyâs he being such a creep?â
George shrugged. âMaybe he doesnât like Christians.â
Jimmy thought about it, then shook his head. âI never saw him act like this with the other Christian kids at school.â
George was thoughtful for a moment. They drove on. Finally he said, âBut the other Christian kids at school werenât his best friend, were they?â
âHuh?â
âThink about it, Jimmy. You were best friends, and suddenly you go through a change that Tonyâs not part of. Since then, heâs been teasing you and picking on you, right?â
âRight,â Jimmy said.
âAnd now youâre thinking that heâs rejected you, right?â
âWell, yeah.â
âAnd whatâs he thinking?â George asked.
âThatâs what I canât figure out!â Jimmy said.
George rubbed his chin. âIâm just guessingâand Iâm not trying to excuse what you two have been doing to each otherâbutâ¦isnât it possible that Tony thinks you rejected him ?â
âWhat!â
âSure,â George said. âYouâre a Christian now, and you think Tony should come along with you into your new adventure. But what if Tonyâs afraid youâre going to leave him behind? Maybe he resents whatâs happened to you because itâll take you away from him.â
âBut we can still be friends if heâd stop acting like such a jerk!â
âCan you?â
âYeah!â Jimmy said. Then he thought about it for a moment and added, âI mean, canât we?â
âI donât know,â George said with a shrug of his shoulders. âSometimes Christianity can tear friendsâeven familiesâapart.â
They pulled into their driveway, and George turned to Jimmy. âYou know youâll have to be punished. I canât have you going around punching kids in the noseâeven if it seemed like self-defense.â
âAt this rate, Iâm gonna be grounded for life.â
âItâs going to seem like it. Iâm adding two weeks to your restriction,â George said.
âBut Dad!â
âDonât argue. You might get time off for good behavior, but youâre going to have to be really good. â
George opened his door to get out.
Jimmy sat and stewed. Tony had gotten him in trouble again.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Tuesday Evening at Home
J IMMY WENT STRAIGHT to his room and paced around like a lion in a cage. Two more weeksâ restriction, and all because of Tony. It wasnât fair!
His mom peeked in on him. âHi, Jimmy,â she said.
âHi,â he said unhappily.
âSorry you had a bad day.â
Jimmy frowned at
