is the engine making now?”
Bob looked at Carrie. She shook her head, “I heard a thunk when you did, but nothing now,” she said.
Bob nodded and told Dave, “We heard one sound like a thunk or clunk, and then the alternator light came on.” Bob listened and smiled, giving thumbs up to Carrie. “OK,” he nodded handing the phone back to Carrie. “Keep him on the line. He thinks we can make it back without an engine failure.”
Carrie cradled the phone and listened to Dave talking, “Carrie, I really think you will be safe to come back. Yesterday, the mechanic used the old alternator belt when he installed the new part. It sounds like he didn’t tighten the bolts enough and the vibration of the plane has jarred them loose. The clunk you heard was probably the alternator belt coming off. If it doesn’t tangle with the engine, you will be fine for at least thirty minutes.  Even if you lose battery power, you will be safe. You just can’t talk to other aircraft and I don’t think that’s a major issue down here. I didn’t see a single plane this morning once I left the major airport.”
She looked over at Bob focusing on the control panels then she looked at them herself commenting, “I don’t see the gauges moving too much. That’s a good sign, isn’t it?”
Bob nodded his reassurance and squeezed her hand quickly before returning to the controls. She looked out and reported, “Dave, the campground is behind us now. We should be home soon. Did Pedro have to beat your door down?”
Carrie smiled at Dave’s response, “Sorry we drug you out of the shower. You can take a nap when we’re safe on the ground.  Bob says you should go find Jose. We will need his tool kit to work on the plane. Oh, I see coastline that I recognize now.”
Bob made one more scan of the controls. Battery power was still dropping but he didn’t see any other aircraft in the area so he turned toward the motel and prepared for landing. Carrie said a prayer and held onto the phone till her knuckles were white.
It only took a moment but it seemed like a lifetime till Carrie felt the bump, bump of the tires hitting the grass. She laughed spontaneously at the sound grabbing Bob’s shoulder as he applied the brakes. Dave came running up to them as they opened the doors and stood up.
“Welcome home,” he said jovially, “I brought you a cold beer, Bob.”  He thrust the drink into his friend’s hand slapping him on the back, “Good job, both of you. Anything can happen in a day’s flying. That what makes it so much damn fun.”
Carrie climbed down and walked around to give Bob a hug. “You did well,” she whispered in his ear kissing his cheek.
“My co-pilot,” he said proudly, wrapping his arm around her waist giving it a squeeze.
“OK, enough lovey-dovey,” remarked Dave, “Let’s look at that alternator to see what’s wrong.”
“I think I’ll wait for you guys in the room,” Carrie said. “Some quiet time with a book sounds good right now.”  She kissed Bob quickly and turned toward the motel.
He watched her walk away wanting her to run back and hug him again. She had stayed calm. Some women he knew would have cried hysterically.
Jose walked up bringing his toolkit.  “Everything OK, senor?” he asked as he handed the kit to Dave.
“Let’s take a look,” replied Dave lifting the engine cowling and looking inside. “Oh, yeah, just as I thought, the belt is laying here in the bottom. You’re lucky it didn’t twist into the engine. That would have been a mess. We can make this right in about ten minutes.”
Bob shook his head, “From your mouth to God’s ears,” he said, “How can I help?”
“Just hand me the tools as I call for them and then I’ll take it for a test flight to make sure we got it right,” Dave assured him.
Bob looked at Jose, “I’ll meet you back at the bar in a few minutes. I wanted to go over a few things with you before we leave, and I’m thinking we should
