I hardly knew you, and now I want to fall into your arms without so much as a thought to the future. I canât do that, Kyle. Not yet. Now that we may become business partnersâ¦or maybe notâ¦I donât think it would be wise to becomeâ¦involved.â
âIâm not asking for a lifelong commitment.â
âAnd Iâm not ready for a relationship.â
âIs that what you think I want?â The question, like a silver blade, cut through the silent emotions stretching between them.
She shook her head. âI donât know what you want, Kyle, but I know that neither one of us would be satisfied with a one-night stand.â She watched him cautiously, her head tilted upward to meet his impassioned gaze. Without a word she dared him to deny the truth.
A lazy smile stole over his rugged features. âHow do you know so much about me?â he asked, as he gently pushed an errant copper lock out of her eyes.
âI donât. Not yet. But I hope to God that any man Iâm attracted to isnât interested in one lonely night of passion just to fulfill basic sexual needs.â
His dark brows raised. âYou really lay it on the line, donât you?â
âIt comes with the territory,â she sighed, trying to calm her racing pulse. Why did she feel compelled to explain herself to him? Why did she care? âIâve worked hard to get where I am, and it hasnât been easy in a predominantly manâs world. If I had become sexually involved with any of the men Iâve worked with, Iâm sure the business would have suffered. And to me, itâs just not worth the price.â She could see his eyes narrowing in disbelief.
âAre you trying to convince me that youâre a hardnosed business woman who puts her company before everything, including her own pleasure?â he asked dubiously.
âConsidering the circumstances, I think you should be pleased.â
âWhat I am is unconvinced.â Just what kind of a woman was he dealing with?
The hint of a smile teased her lips. âGood. Because Iâm trying to point out that to me, sex is more than just pleasure.â
âA commitment?â
âYes.â
He paused and the silence in the car weighed heavily on Marenâs shoulders. How much of her soul could she afford to bare? âIs that what you expect from meâ a commitment? â
Maren grinned at his obvious discomfort. âNo. What Iâm trying to tell you is that Iâm not ready to give one,â she explained.
Kyle let out a gust of air and ran his fingers through his hair. He chuckled despite the uneasy feeling in the atmosphere. âIâm afraid that meeting you might turn out to be the biggest mistake of my life.â
âAnd why is that?â Her heart seemed to miss a beat. She knew that he was joking, but there was an undercurrent of truth beneath his words.
âBecause not only are you going to cost me a fortune in videotape production, but youâre also going to frustrate the hell out of me!â
âYouâre breaking my heart,â she teased with a wicked gleam lighting her eyes.
âIf only I could,â he muttered, almost to himself.
The smile on her face faded. âThen why donât you try being honest with meâ completely honest.â
âI have been.â
She pursed her lips and shook her head, dismissing his statement as a careless lie. âI donât think so. It doesnât take a genius to figure out that somethingâs upâsomething big.
âSuch as?â
âI wish I knew, Kyle,â she replied, a sad smile resurfacing. âIâve been in this business for nearly five years and I can sense when someoneâs not leveling with me.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âThen let me take a guessâ¦â
âAll right.â
âDoes this have anything to do with the
