at the sky?â
âMost of the time where I live itâs pretty brown.â Sam slipped into the tub and tilted his head back too, surprised at how pretty it really was, the high horse-tail wisps of white cloud turning yellow, and the blue like a robinâs egg.
After a couple minutes, Sam asked, âWhen do I go home? To Trevorâs house, I mean?â
McKenna rolled her head over to look at him. âBet you canât wait to see it.â
âI guess. Iâm more worried about his mom than I am excited about seeing the house. I donât know if Iâm going to be having too much fun.â
âOh no.â McKenna sat up. âYouâve got to have fun. Thatâs what this whole thing is. Itâs about fun. Itâs a story. I said that. Itâs a real story. Samâs mom wonât notice. Sheâll be on her phone, that you can bet on.â
âHer phone?â
âThe woman is either texting or talking twenty-four seven. Except when she sleeps. Iâve seen her texting in the bathroom. Yeah, donât shake your head.â
âIâm sure she looks at him.â
âMaybe a glance here and there,â McKenna said. âI donât think she listens much, even if she looks. Youâll be fine.â
âThat sounds lonely,â Sam said.
âItâs just his mom. Sheâs a workaholic.â
âHe said he doesnât even go to school.â
âTrevor has people around him all the time. Everyone loves him. Everyone wants him. Itâs fun.â
Sam shifted in his seat, the bathing suit suddenly feeling wound up and tight from the bubbles. He tugged the legs back down to his knees. âI think Iâm getting waterlogged.â
âLetâs get out. We can play Xbox until she gets here.â
âSounds good.â
Sam dried off and changed into Trevorâs clothes in the pool house. When he came out, McKenna had on a robe. She led him inside to a small TV room with a leather couch and bookshelves on either side of the TV. McKenna opened a wood panel beneath the screen and took out two controllers.
âMost girls donât play Xbox,â Sam said, feeling silly at the sound of his own words.
âIâm not most girls, right?â McKenna winked at him.
Samâs face burned again.
âNazi Zombies?â
âHalo?â
âHow about something in between?â She laughed and sat down, and they logged into a game of Left4Dead2. They fought side by side, reviving each other, sharing health packs, and laughing out loud.
Sam was surprised when his phone buzzed and the text was from Trevorâs mom.
Iâm here:)
Sam looked at McKenna. âSheâs here.â
McKenna put down her controller and stood up. âYou okay?â
âNo. Iâm not a great actor. Iâm not even an actor. Iâm a baseball player.â
McKenna led Sam to the front door. âI think you should pretend you donât feel well. Thatâs even if she notices you.â
âIs she really that bad?â
âSheâs not bad. Sheâs a movie star. Youâll like her. I do. But sheâs got a lot going on.â
Sam looked at the doorknob. He reached for it, but his hand trembled. There was a mirror on the wall beside a grandfather clock. Sam peered into it.
âYouâre sure this can work?â
âIâm not sure of anything.â McKennaâs eyes seemed to sparkle. âThatâs what makes it fun. Donât worry. Nothing bad can happen.â
Sam nodded, and McKenna swung the door open for him. She kissed Sam on the cheek, and he seemed to float down the steps and across the walkway to the big rumbling blue car. He opened the car door and smelled leather. He slid into the seat, clutching Trevorâs phone.
Trevorâs mom put her own phone down and looked over at him. âOh, angel, look at you. Donât you feel well?â
