its arms around her.
âKara!â laughed Elly, hugging her little sister. Then Ellyâs parents stepped into the room too, and the warm feeling in Ellyâs chest grew stronger and stronger.
I didnât need the Heart Tracker at all! thought Elly happily. I knew they were here anyway.
âIt is so good to see you,â said Ellyâs mum, hugging her tightly. âWe missed you so much!â
âWe wouldâve been here sooner,â added Ellyâs dad, âbut we had trouble getting across the rainbow. It seems to be malfunctioning.â
Suddenly, everyone was staring at Elly again.
âBefore your arrival, weâd just asked Elinora a very important question,â explained Grandmother to Ellyâs parents. âWe havenât heard her answer yet.â
âYeah, Elly,â sneered Gabi. âWhat are you going to do? Are you going to give up your wand and live like a human?â
âOr are you going to keep being a terrible fairy?â sniggered Nadia.
âI think itâs about time that you two went back to the sick bay,â snapped Madame Fernyfrond. âAnd donât think that just because you alerted me to Elly and Saphieâs escape, you can avoid punishment. You broke the school rules today by performing a serious spell without supervision. You are on pest control for the rest of the year.â
âI suspect theyâll be keeping those scaly skins for some time,â said Grandmother, eyeing the two lizardy-fairies. âThat should make them think twice about breaking important Academy rules again.â
Gabi and Nadia looked very cross, but they turned and stalked out of the library.
Then Ellyâs mum looked at her very seriously. âMaybe it would be best if you gave up your wings, darling,â she said.
âYou could go back to South Street School and be just like all the human children,â added her dad.
Elly looked around. It felt like everyone had already decided that she should give up being a fairy. It was weird. She had thought that sheâd be much better suited to living like a human. But now that she was being offered the chance to change, she suddenly wasnât so sure she wanted it.
Itâs true that Iâm not the best at doing spells, thought Elly, but Iâve still managed to grant wishes for Jess. Granting wishes felt good. It felt like something she was meant to do. Would she still be able to grant wishes if she gave up being a fairy?
I always thought that skateboarding was way more fun than flying , Elly frowned to herself. But flying along with Saphie tonight was pretty cool. Itâd be a shame to give up flying just as Iâm getting the hang of it.
Then she looked at Saphie. I probably couldnât stay friends with Saph if I stop being a fairy, either.
âWell, Elinora?â said Grandmother. âHave you made your decision?â
Elly nodded. âYes,â she said. âIâve decided that I want to keep being a fairy.â
For a moment, everyone seemed too surprised to say anything.
Then Saphie threw her arms around her. âIâm so glad to hear that!â she said.
âAre you sure?â asked Ellyâs mum. âI thought you hated being a fairy!â
Elly shrugged. âI thought I did, too. But you know, I actually want to be a fairy now.â
âWell that is just splendid news!â said Grandmother, beaming. Elly had never seen her look so happy.
âBut,â added Elly quickly, âIâll probably always do things a little differently to all the other fairies. And Iâll probably keep making mistakes. Itâs just the way I am.â
Grandmother frowned, but before she could speak, Saphie jumped in. âItâs good that you do things differently, Elly,â she said. âWho knows â maybe you can teach the rest of us some things!â
âWhat about school?â asked Ellyâs dad. âYou
