Monday to Friday.â
âThey want to pay me? Like for real?â
âOf course theyâll pay you! Itâs not a lot, but it will add up fast. I promise.â
âWow! This is exciting!â
âSure is! Now go get some sleep. You have a big day tomorrow.â

There Are Only Twenty-Four Hours in a Day
âS o , I hear youâre trying to scam jobs at the radio station,â Ivy whispers as she walks past my desk.
âNews travels fast,â I mutter, looking in the other direction.
âYouâre wasting your time, you know. Youâre not going to make a cent.â
âIâm not sure why you care, Ivy, but Iâm pretty sure I will. I start working for Andy today.â
âYou are mistaken, my friend.â She looks around, making sure she has an audience, and laughs. â Andy doesnât have children!â
A few kids snicker, which fires her up even more. âIf youâre gonna lie, Hannah, at least do your research!â
âI know Andy doesnâ t have kids, â I answer.
âWell, then why would she hire you?â Ivy demands, as a far-too -confident set of duck-lips pop up on her face.
âI can answer that,â Chloe says, magically appearing, like she always does, whenever thereâs a chance to dish out some of her usual nastiness. âI just had lunch with my dad and it seems that our little Hannah has somehow convinced the associate director that she has a brain.â
âWhat? They hired her, like, for a real job?â Ivy asks, dumbfounded.
âYes, a real job.â Chloe grins smugly. âAnyone want to take bets on how long sheâll last before sheâs fired?â She turns and taps me on the nose. âOh, and I guess you wonât have time to work on our fundraising campaign now, will you? You know, with your busy schedule and all.â
âFundraising campaign?â
Chloe rolls her eyes. âFor our ski trip, dummy! But donât worry. A. J. and I will handle everything . Iâll let you know if we need you to take minutes or something, okay?â
âOh ⦠I can do fundraising!â I say, looking at her straight on. âIâm all about fundraising!â
âReally? You do realize that people arenât just going to throw money at you, right? Fundraising takes hours and hours of work, and lots of creativity. Do you have hours and hours, Hannah? Do you even have a single creative idea?â Chloe glances around at the group of kids, now surrounding us, and taps my head with her finger.
First my nose, now my head! That girl has got some nerve!
âIâve got tons of ideas!â I cry out, pushing her hand away, at the same time wishing I could stuff the words I just said back in my mouth. I have no ideas. I have nothing.
âOh, and just because you are supposed to be this ahhhmazing skier ,â Chloe says, pursing her lips, âdonât think for one second that you are going to take charge of this campaign.â
âTake charge?â
âBecause last year, Piper was all over it, like she always was, weaseling her way into everything A.J. did.â
âEverything?â Who was this girl?
âOh my gawd, Chloe!â Ivy puts her hands to her heart and shakes her head. âYou are soooo much prettier than Piper. I donât get why he had a thing for her and not you!â
âIvy,â Chloe says, forcing a stiff smile, âit doesnât matter because Piperâs gone now, and itâs someone elseâs turn!â
âYeah!â Ivy repeats. âSomeone elseâs turn!â
âMy turn.â Chloe stares at me angrily. âSo back off!â
â No problem, â I say, wondering if she means back off A.J. or back off trying to take charge, or both. In any case it doesnât matter. I turn to mush whenever A.J. comes near me, so thatâs not going to happen, and as far as taking charge goes,
