Bastien turned Zach onto his side. Again Lisette marveled over how soft the feathers were. Softer than rabbitâs fur.
âIâve set countless broken bones in the past,â Bastien murmured, âbut broken wings . . . ? This is a first.â
âI appreciate your trying.â
He glanced at her as he worked. âAny particular reason you didnât ask Melanie to help?â
Bastienâs wife, Dr. Melanie Lipton, was a now-immortal doctor who worked at the human network, searching for a cure for the virus. Either that or a way to prevent or reverse the brain damage it caused in humans. She was also doing everything she could to carry Ami safely through her pregnancy.
Lisette sighed. âI didnât want to get her in trouble.â
His lips quirked as he manipulated one of the wings. âBut you didnât mind getting me in trouble?â
Ethan snorted. âWhen are you not in trouble?â
Bastien laughed. âTrue. Iâm going to need something I can use as splints.â
Bastien slowly and methodically tended the many injuries that marred Zachâs lean form. When he finished, Lisette walked Bastien upstairs and followed him out the front door.
âWill you have time to get home before sunrise?â she asked, eyeing the gray that preceded dawn.
âThe way I drive? Yes.â He paused on his way to a Chevy Volt and turned to study her.
Lisette shifted, uncomfortable beneath his silent scrutiny.
âAre you sure youâre ready for this?â he asked at last.
âReady for what?â
âBeing on Sethâs shit list.â
Hell no . The thought of facing Sethâs wrath made her quake in her boots. âYou survived it,â she replied coolly, but feared she didnât fool him.
He shook his head. âOnly because Seth believed himself responsible. Itâs why he still tolerates my bullshit. And why he wonât hold my helping you against me. He feels guilty about overlooking me and leaving me to fend for myself for two centuries.â
Whenever a gifted one was transformed into an immortal, Seth sensed it, made his way to his (or very rarely her) side, and aided him in the transition into his new life. Seth then either trained the new Immortal Guardian himself, or saw to it that the newbie was trained by another and received the guidance all new immortals needed.
But Bastien had escaped his notice. So Bastien had mistakenly believed himself a vampire and had lived among those monsters for two hundred years.
All knew his violent, troubled past haunted their leader.
âDo you hold him responsible?â she asked.
âNo,â he said, his voice devoid of rancor. âAnd Iâm sure heâs seen as much in my thoughts. But the guilt nevertheless lingers and pretty much gives me a permanent get-out-of-jail-free card. You , on the other hand, donât have that protection.â
No, she didnât.
âI learned very quickly,â he went on, âthat Immortal Guardians have a pack mentality.â Three years with them, and Bastien still didnât consider himself one of them. âIf Seth turns on you,â he warned, âthe others will, too.â
She swallowed hard. âMy brothersââ
âHave wives to think of. And, in Richartâs case, a stepson.â
âI know.â She didnât have a problem with no longer coming first in her brothersâ affections. It just felt a little scary to know they wouldnât always have her back now.
âIs he worth itâyour fallen angel?â Bastien asked. Again, no scorn or mockery infused his voice.
She honestly didnât know the answer to that and settled for saying, âHe saved my life. I canât forget that.â
âThatâs a hard debt to forget.â Turning, he continued on to the car. âYou have my number.â
âThank you, Bastien.â
He opened the driverâs door. âEthanâs
