affection in his expression. That she could handle. Alexa stretched, testing her muscles with tentative movements. She winced when the stiffness in her ribs and leg penetrated the lingering haze of waking.
“Not too bad,” she lied.
Justin lifted the thick down comforter away from her in stages. He paused to inspect the bruises ringing her upper arm first. He bent over her, pressing a soft kiss just beneath the obvious finger marks.
“Poor baby.” He grunted as he tugged the quilted blanket to her waist and saw the discolored flesh stretching over her ribcage. It must have looked pretty nasty because his attention didn’t waver from the injury to her fully bared breasts. He trailed his fingertips over the area, light enough to tickle a bit, before taking his hand away and touching his lips to his palm. Justin laid it over her side in a gesture that melted her further. He made his way down to the top of her thigh where a trimmed bandage smacking of Jason’s attention to detail covered the neat row of stitches. His hand trembled when he traced the outline of the gauze.
His attention snapped up to her face. “I’m sorry I wasn’t more careful with you last night. Did I hurt you?”
“No.” She shook her head, she hadn’t felt pain, only pleasure. But if he hadn’t shown up when he did…
“I just wish I’d gotten there sooner.” Regret marked his features before simmering anger covered it over. “If I find the bastard that did this to you, he’s dead.”
“I never said thank you,” she whispered.
Justin leaned forward until his forehead rested against hers and avoiding his gaze became impossible. “You could thank me now.”
The steamy look accompanying his words dared her to ask, “What did you have in mind?”
His broad smile betrayed his trickery and she anticipated a naughty request. “I want to know why you ran from me that day in the mountains. Why you’re still running now.”
“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather have a blow job?” she bargained.
“Very tempting.” He chuckled at her audacity. “But I need to understand what’s holding you back.”
“The fact that I slept with two men at once last night isn’t enough?” She hoped her attitude masked her vulnerability. She teetered off balance, torn between the strength of her emotions for two men, practically strangers, and her logical conclusion that nothing lasting could come of the situation.
“Honey, you can lie to yourself, but you can’t fool me. I tasted your desire when it flooded my mouth.” She couldn’t deny it. “You loved every moment of it.”
“That doesn’t mean that I think it was prudent.” She fought to keep herself cold and rational. Pushing up from the bed, she tried to escape but Justin wouldn’t allow it. He snagged her wrist and returned her to her place beside him.
“It wasn’t prudent to let me come inside your hot pussy without protection?” He thought the lack of a condom bothered her. “I swear I’ve never done that before. I’m sorry, we should have talked about it first but, for the record, I’m healthy.”
“I’m on the pill. My body is safe.” She worried about her heart.
“Someone hurt you.” His scrutiny cut too deep for her comfort. “Worse than these bruises.”
Tears stung her eyes as she frantically tried to blink them away. She wanted to slap him with her words, gain some space to think. “Just like you will, too.”
He didn’t even flinch. “It’s not going to happen, babe. You can trust us.”
“I know your type, Justin.” She couldn’t keep the bitterness from her voice. “You’re reckless, fickle, unfaithful and commitment phobic.”
“No, darlin’.” The volume of his retort escalated. “You’re the one who’s afraid, not me. I’m willing to admit that I’ve fallen head over heels for you. You want to hear me say it? Fine. I. Love. You. And that’s not going to change.”
“What? That’s crazy! I just met you!”
