lifted my fist, slamming it hard into his jaw. âGood,â I yelled and looked at Nokea. âPut on your clothes.â
She wasted no time and hurried into her clothes. Once she was dressed, I told her to toss me my jeans. She did and as I stepped into them, the officer made a move for the gun. After all of the racial names heâd called us, I couldnât help but pull the trigger. The bullet went into his upper shoulder and Nokea covered her mouth. She started to cry and I snatched up the rest of my clothes, Nokeaâs purse and our money on the nightstand. I then took the car keys from the officerâs pocket and Nokea and I left.
In a serious panic, we made our way to the police car and I drove off. Nokea was a nervous wreck and couldnât stop crying.
âDo you think heâs dead?â she asked.
âHonestly, I donât give a fuck! And you shouldnât either.â
Speeding like a bat out of hell, I drove back to my car. It was still parked on the side of the road. I hurried out of the police car and opened the trunk. All along, there was a pump in there, as well as another spare. I wasnât sure if the spare would work, but I put air in my spare tire and had never changed a tire so quickly. I left the police car on the side of the road and Nokea and I quickly made our way to the highway.
Chapter 4
Nokea
Â
Shaneâs driving was bound to kill us. The roads were still slick and he was in a serious panic. When I suggested that he slow down, he yelled at me. I was devastated too, but he was more than unstable.
âCan we just pull over and chill out for a while?â I asked. âYour hands are shaking and Iâm very frightened.â
âIt ainât everyday that I go around shooting, possibly killing muthafuckas, Nokea. And a cop, too? Damn,â he said shaking his head. âI donât know what the hell Iâve gotten myself into.â
âIt was self defense, Shane. Since weâre miles and miles away from there, can we please stop and get our heads on straight? Besides, that spare tire isnât going to last much longer so letâs calm down, get a nice room for the rest of the night and chill.â
âI need to get you home, now. Weâre not stopping again.â
I touched his shoulder. âShane, please. Please do it for me. I donât like how fast youâre driving, and sooner or later, I will make it home.â
When the exit sign showed a Comfort Inn ahead, Shane listened to me and made the exit. He parked the car and I went inside to get us a room. He stayed in the car. When I came back to it, his head was leaned back on the headrest and his eyes were closed. I tapped the window.
âLetâs go inside,â I said.
Once we got to the room, I opened the door and Shane locked it behind us. The room had double beds and he lay back on the bed close by the window. He placed his arm on his forehead, closing his eyes again.
âWhat are we going to do, Nokea?â
âI donât know. But, I know Iâd better call Jaylin. Heâs been calling me like crazy.â
Shane sat up and looked at me. âWhatever you do, please do not tell him what happened between us. As a matter of fact, donât tell anybody until I can figure this shit out.â
âHow am I supposed to keep something like this from him?â
âDo you really think Jaylin is going to understand why we did what we did?â
âBut, we were forced to do it! Jaylin would understand that neither one of us wanted to die.â
âNo, he wouldnât understand. And youâre crazy if you think heâs going to embrace me with open arms and not throw you out of the fucking house. If he even suspects I was inside of you, forced or not, all hell is going to break loose and you know it.â
âBut, we have a legitimate explanation. You saved my life back there and there was no doubt in my mind that the officer
