THE DOCTORS PERSONAL SOAP To make your own spray for ants, just purchase a bar of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap™ at a health food store. Mix 1 tablespoon in 1 quart of cool tap water and place the mixture into a sprayer.
Spray all the baseboards and wherever you are having a problem. If you add a small amount of the soap to your mop water it will act as a deterrent on the floors. The spray works well on the outside as well as inside the house.
ANTS LOVE AFFAIR WITH APHIDS Aphids are one of the ant’s favorites. They will find an aphid and stroke the aphid with their antennae until the aphid releases a drop of honeydew, which they bring back to their nursery to feed their young.
CLEANER THAT DETERS ANTS You can purchase a natural cleaner called Citra Solve™. It is a natural citrus based cleaner that is not soap but is very effective in repelling ants. It does have a pleasant citrus aroma, so smell it before you purchase it to be sure that the smell will not be offensive to you or anyone in your family. This product will actually dissolve most insect bodies and is safe around the house. Use ½ tablespoon per 1 quart of water.
PROTEIN IN PLACE OF SWEETS You can replace sweets in all recipes with a protein source such as peanut butter or any type of moist pet food for excellent results mixing it with either boric acid or borax. Keep away from pets and children. If you place the mixture in a shallow dish, be sure and leave a small glob of honey in front of the dish to attract them.
INSTANT KILLS The use of instant grains has been popular to kill most ants in recent years. The grains tend to expand in the stomachs and cause the stomachs to burst killing the ant. The best grains to use are instant rice and instant grits.
Trail Locations inside Homes Next to wiring or plumbing that has been cut through studs Trails through insulation in wall spaces Edges of cabinets and close to furniture Tree branches or bushes that touch the house Old stump root channels that may go underneath the house
PUT OUT THE STOP SIGNS Ant activity in the home tends to increase 5-10 minutes before sundown and is at its busiest between 10PM and 2AM; however, some species prefer to be active from 8PM to 4AM in some parts of the country. The temperature and rainfall does not affect the ant’s activity.
FOLLOW THE FAT ANT If you can get a good look at the ant, check out their abdomen. If the abdomen is distended it means that they have had a great dinner and are heading back to the nest to watch some TV. This is the ant you want to follow, not the skinny one looking for a meal. Most of the full ants will usually be carrying a doggie bag back to their friends.
OUTSIDE KILLER Pyrethrum is a natural substance that can be purchased in any garden shop. The powder does not blend well with water, but if you add a few drops of liquid soap to 1 cup of water and add 1 tablespoon of pyrethrum it will make a great paste that can be used outside and can be used in a sprayer if strained well.
IT’S TEA TIME FOR ANTS If you prepare a tea using molasses and Jungle Rain™, which is a natural, organic soap based product it will act as a great ant deterrent when used in a sprayer.
GERMANS PROTECT ANTS Since ants have a vital role in the health of a forest, the German government protects ants from being eliminated by natural or artificial means. However, since they are not welcome in homes, you will find lavender blossoms near the doors and windows in German households to repel the ants.
SKIP THE EXPENSIVE SPRAYS Window cleaner will kill all ants, so keep that in mind the next time you are going to purchase the expensive bug spray.
CAUSING STATIC The essential oil called Tea Tree Oil interferes with the ant’s antennae
