familiar about him, but Nancy couldnât quite place his face. âI really am sorry,â she said again, turning back to Gunther.
âAre you all right?â the strangerâs voice continued.
Those words! That voice! Nancy was sure sheâd heard them before. She spun back around. The young man was looking at her with an odd expression in his eyes.
Nancy gasped. âIt was you!â
Chapter
Nine
F OR A MOMENT Nancy and the blond man stood staring at each other. â It was you!â she cried. â Youâre the one who rescued me when the tow rope broke!â
The strangerâs blue eyes crinkled into an admiring smile. âYou must be quite a skier. You reacted so fast once you realized the danger, and you knew exactly how to fall.â
âNot well enough to keep from getting knocked out!â Nancy laughed breathlessly. âIâm so glad to see you again! I was beginning to think Iâd imagined you, and I never did get a chance to thank you.â
âThat doesnât matter. I didnât want to leave while you were out like that, but your boyfriend came up and took over. Pretty abruptly. Who is the guy, anyway?â
âLuke Ericsen,â Nancy replied as the music ended. âAnd he isnât my boyfriend. Ned Nickerson is. Over there.â She indicated the table where Ned was sitting. âLukeâs the ski instructor at Webb Cove Lodge, where weâre staying. This is my friend Gunther.â
Gunther and the man shook hands, then Gunther excused himself and threaded his way through the crowd to Bess. You and Luke know each other, Nancy thought, looking at her rescuer. You were talking about being together at a Broken Leg Café. âI still donât know who you are,â she said aloud.
âMichael Price,â the young man introduced himself with another dazzling smile. âIâm a free-lance writer, mainly sports. Right now, Iâm researching ski resorts in New England.â
âIâm Nancy Drew.â
âWhat do you do?â Michael asked.
Nancy decided not to tell Michael she was a detective. âRight now, I dance,â she replied demurely. The crowd around them had started rocking to a new song, and Michael grinned.
âWe do seem to be blocking traffic.â Michael began moving to the music, and Nancy fell into sync with him. âDoesnât your boyfriend dance?â he asked.
âHe loves to, but I wonât let him tonightâheâs banged up his ankle.â
As Nancy told Michael about Nedâs accident, he frowned and asked, âSo this Luke lent him damaged skis?â He pursed his lips, thinking. âThat sounds pretty irresponsible to me.â
Nancy looked up into Michaelâs face. All of a sudden, she couldnât stand it anymore. Why was Michael pretending he didnât know Luke, when Nancy had heard them talking together? She had to find out from him what was going on!
âMichael!â Nancy exclaimed. âIâm going to be honest with you, and I hope youâll be honest with me. I donât trust Luke, and I need to find out more about him for the sake of a friend. I know you know him . . . so why donât you tell me whatever you know?â
A peculiar expression crossed Michaelâs face, but Nancy couldnât read it. Then he replied, âAll right, I think I can be open with you. I said Luke sounded irresponsible to me. Well, thereâs more to it than just a hunch.
âYouâre right, I have met Luke before. He lent some equipment to someone I knew. And guess whatâthat guy had an accident, too. Only he wasnât as lucky as your boyfriend. He hit his head, went into a coma, and three days later, he was dead.â
Nancy gasped. Luke really could be a murderer!
âRemember,â Michael said, âIâm not telling you he did it on purpose. Maybe it was just carelessness. But that doesnât bring my
