that’s what I let them think. I am the last of the Dressel line. I am supposed to have powerful children that will take over after me, but I haven’t been able to impregnate any woman. I can’t have children with a human! They would be weak! The only thing worse than having a child with a human is having one with a demon. I love Gabby, but I can’t choose her over my people. Can I? My love for her grows every day, Am I already choosing her over my people? I have to find the Oracle so she can tell me what is going on. Until then, Gabby being a human will be kept a secret.
I walk to the secret underground elevator and press 2. My office is on 2, plus I need to get Nigel’s room ready and check on the progress with the demons. My people and the demons have been fighting for as long as I can remember. We have captured demons and figured out how to hold them so they can’t flash out. We do experiments on them to find all their weaknesses. The underground is 5 levels deep. Level 1 is the blood lab. It contains all strands of Immortal blood that are known, and any blood testing is done there. Level 2 is the office spaces. Level 3 is where Godgels that screw up and need to be punished are. There are many different types of punishment—electroshock, skin peeling, and even death. Immortals heal fast so we needed a place where they could be continually punished without being heard. This is where Nigel will be for a while. He will be given a weeks’ worth of electroshock to be administered every 8 hours. Levels 4 and 5 are the demon levels. Demons are held, punished, and tested on those levels. I help out on the torture of these creatures. It brings me extreme pleasure to cause them pain.
I spend all night in my office. Not intentionally, but there are no windows underground. I must have fallen asleep because, the next thing I know, Derrick is waking me. “Gabby is screaming bloody murder. I think it might be another nightmare.”
I run up to our room and, before I get halfway, I can hear her. This doesn’t sound like a nightmare scream. This sounds like she is in pain. I rush to the door.

Chapter 9: 25

    Gabby

    ––––––––
I wake up to the sound of screaming. Wait. That’s me! My whole body feels like it is on fire. Dear god, make it stop. “Make it stop, please!”
I am sweating, soaking the bed. My fingers are gripping the sheet so tightly that I think I hear them rip, but I can’t be sure because my screams are too loud. Who is burning me? Why don’t I smell burnt flesh by now? I shouldn’t have any skin left! I feel and smell Neeko sit beside me. Why isn’t he making it stop? This has to be a nightmare.
“Gabby, I’m here. It’ll be over soon.”
    What will be over soon?
“Why are you doing this, Neeko?” My voice breaks.
I am so tired. Why am I so tired? I feel Neeko’s lips on mine and hear him say, “Sleep now, baby. It will be over when you wake.” I slip into a deep sleep.
I slowly come back to awareness. My skin tingles, but isn’t burning. What caused it? What did Neeko do? I can barely open my eyes. My muscles are tight and achy. As I try to get up, a slight breeze brushes my face, followed by Neeko’s voice, “How are you feeling?”
“What did you do to me?”
“I didn’t do anything to you, baby. I came in here because you were screaming. I gave you something to knock you out so you wouldn’t feel any more pain.”
“What caused it? What caused me to feel like my skin was burning off?”
    “See for yourself.”
He lifts my arm up and I gasp. “What the hell?!”
I have a tattoo running down my arm. It has purple vines that twist and turn, wrapping around my wrist like a bracelet. Smaller vines come off the bigger ones, and twirl into an open circle. It’s quite beautiful. I lift my other arm and it’s got the exact same tattoo. It goes up my arm and disappears under my shirt. The skin still tingles. Neeko looks at me and shakes his head, his eyes shining and
