virus started and it was because of my father.” Her blunt, bold statement shocked the humans. Will’s face was questioning.
She continued, “We have a proposition for you. Are there others in your group?”
Josh and Will glanced at each other and Will nodded.
“Well this is hardly the place to tell you what we need to. May we accompany you to your shelter? I don’t like being out in the open with these zombies.” Her blue eyes held hope. The others let her do the talking; it seemed that she was the leader of their faction.
Will and Josh agreed to let the vampires follow them to Josh’s house. They wouldn’t be able to come in unless invited and Josh figured if they were going to attack them, they would have already.
It was dark by the time they got to Josh’s house. The vampires helped them unload the supplies. They brought it all to the front door and stood patiently. Brendan and Mari were taken aback by the extra people.
Josh didn’t invite them in, instead opting to have them go around back to the patio table to talk. Brendan shut the door, leaving Mari inside.
Lexi straightened up and smiled sadly. “My father, Samuel, fed on a dead human. Consequently, it poisoned him and he passed away a couple months ago. My father started this, and for that I am sorry. It’s affecting us as well. We vampires cannot feed off the dead or we’ll have the same fate as my father did.”
Lexi turned her attention to Will. “You’re Will, aren’t you?”
Will seemed surprised, but offered a slight nod of the head. She smiled wide. Josh thought to himself what a pretty girl she was.
“You are very well-known in our south sector. We know you hate vamps. We know you’re a damn good hunter too. And while this may cloud your judgment, I think my proposal is logical.
“With this infection, we have lost our food source. The number of dead is rising at an alarming rate. We have always run smoothly with stability, like you. This is a far cry from stability.
“We need a group to offer an arrangement. We need a constant food source. We need protection during the day. We are not so full of ourselves to deny our vulnerabilities during this situation.
“And in return we can promise protection during the nights from all things. We have a network of other vamps far and wide and we know how things are going throughout the nation. It’s bad. We can offer that too. Communication to others.” Lexi folded her small hands in her lap and sighed. Miguel, the Spanish vampire, put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed.
“We’re all going to die horrible deaths if we don’t learn how to get along,” Sienna said. She was good-looking too, but looked older than Lexi.
Will took a deep breath, and just at that moment Mari came out the back door.
“Are y’all bad vampires like Mama was?” she asked quietly. She clutched the new stuffed animal that Will had given her.
Lexi’s face fell. “Her mother was bit?”
“Yes and so was my wife. Will killed them a couple months ago,” Josh replied.
Lexi’s blue eyes widened. “Sweet girl, we aren’t bad vampires. We don’t turn other humans. We would never do that to someone.”
Mari gave a small smile and continued. “I think my mama was just hungry. If she was in her right mind she wouldn’t have come at me or my daddy.”
Lexi nodded. “I think you’re right. It’s very difficult when you’re a new vampire. Much like a newborn baby, all they want to do is get full. I’m sorry your mama died. I just lost my father, too, and it hurts very much.”
Mari made a move to come near Lexi and Brendan instinctively put his arm out.
“I’m not going to hurt your daughter, sir. I have never harmed a child in my whole life.” Lexi stated, her face showing her offense. Brendan’s shoulders slouched and he dropped his arm. Mari, with a grin, went over to Lexi and touched her face.
    “You feel a little cold.”
“I do; that’s part of what we are. It’s kind of nice
