THE INVITATION
T aylor always waited for Barney, the mailman. Taylor usually didnât get any mail, but he liked to sit and wait and think of all the things that might come.
That particular day, there were three long envelopes, two fat envelopes and a small blue envelope.
âNothing for you, Taylor,â said Barney, âexcept this one. It says âThe Tippet Family.â So at least part of it is for you.â
It was the small blue envelope. And it smelled like perfume. Taylor sniffed the envelope and wondered what could be in it.
âDid we get any mail?â asked his sister Margaret. âLet me see those,â she said, grabbing the envelopes. âThis one smells pretty.â
âMaybe thereâs a flower inside,â said Taylor.
âItâs too flat,â said Margaret.
âMaybe a skinny flower,â said Taylor. âOr a tiny one.â
âNo, no, no,â said Margaret. âBut why donât you open it up? Then weâll know for sure.â
âShouldnât we wait for Mother to get back from the store?â asked Taylor.
âI donât think so,â said Margaret. âThe envelope says âThe Tippet Family.â And youâre part of this family.â
âYou are too,â said Taylor, âso you should help.â
âOkay, weâll each do half,â said Margaret. âYou can go first.â
âWhy?â asked Taylor.
âBecause,â said Margaret, âyou saw it first. And youâre the one who really wants to find out whatâs inside.â
Taylor took the envelope from Margaret.
âAre you sure I should do this?â he asked.
âOf course,â said Margaret.
Taylor started ripping the envelope. He did his half and looked at Margaret.
âThere, now itâs your turn,â he said, handing her the envelope.
âYou have to do a little more,â said Margaret.
âAre you sure?â asked Taylor.
âOf course,â said Margaret.
Taylor opened the envelope a tiny bit more. He looked up at Margaret.
âA little, little more,â she said.
Through the window, Margaret saw Mother coming up the driveway.
âKeep going,â she said to Taylor.
When Mother came in, Margaret said, âLook at Taylor, heâs opening the mail.â
Mother took the envelope and opened it all the way.
âItâs an invitation from Grandma,â said Mother. âSheâs having a surprise party for Grandpaâs birthday.â
âWhen?â asked Taylor. âWhat should we get Grandpa? Will we have a cake?â
Before Mother could answer, Margaret said, âBut, Mother, what about Taylor? He was opening the envelope.â
Mother smiled. âSometimes,â she said, âsurprises just wonât wait.â

THE PRESENT
M argaret and Taylor were walking to the store. It was the day of Grandpaâs party and they needed a present.
Margaret walked fast. Taylor walked slow. He collected leaves and counted the rocks.
âHurry up!â said Margaret.
âLetâs look for a present in the toy department,â said Margaret.
âWould Grandpa want a toy?â asked Taylor.
âOf course,â said Margaret. âAnd that way weâll have something new to play with.â
Margaret saw a stuffed elephant. It was in a box covered with cellophane. The box said SOFTEST TOY EVER!
Margaret wanted to touch the elephant to make sure, so she punched her finger through the wrapping. Taylor wanted to try it, and just as he was about to, Margaret grabbed his hand.
âNo,â she said. âRemember, weâre here to buy a present for Grandpa.â
Margaret led Taylor to the furniture department.
âGrandpaâs chairs are all too hard,â said Margaret. âI think he needs a soft one.â
âDo we have enough money for a chair?â asked Taylor.
Margaret didnât answer. She was
