make him consider not pursuing Samantha. Could he ever be the man she’d want him to be?
Then he thought about how she understood him without even trying, how she took pushing him to get better and went way past her job as his therapist. He could tell she wasn’t like that with all her patients. More than anything else, verbally sparring with her the past couple of months offered a thrill and excitement he hadn’t felt in a long time, and that was something he wasn’t ready to give up.

Samantha sat in her office, staring into space, wondering exactly what had happened between herself and Joel. One minute she was in total control and the consummate professional, and the next…the next…What?
She groaned and absently twisted her hair.
“That doesn’t sound like a woman who just spent a couple of hours with the finest man in the city, next to my Walt.”
Samantha glanced up and rolled her eyes at Jenny. “I see you switched up your song. I’m still telling your husband you’re up in here eyeing strange men.”
“Girl, it ain’t nothing strange about that Hightower boy. So what happened today? He left here grinning from ear to ear.”
“That’s because he’s full of the devil.” Samantha pursed her lips in deep thought. Shaking her head to clear it from the image of Joel’s handsome smiling face, she stood.
“Girl, you best just sit back down and tell me all about your visit with Mr. Manly Man. You two have taken the place of my soaps. I don’t even tape All My Children anymore. I’ve got all your business to keep me full of suspense and drama.” She started talking in a fake announcer’s voice. “Will the beautiful Samantha Dash be brave enough to take on the stunningly handsome and sexy Joel Hightower? Tune in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to see if she will get the hint that—”
“Okay, Jenny, dang!” Samantha shook her head and started laughing. “You just won’t quit.”
“Well, at least you’re not wasting your breath trying to convince me he doesn’t like you. Come on, spill it, girl. I ain’t got all day. This was your last appointment of the day and y’all stayed in here an extra twenty minutes. I should have been left for the day.”
“You could have left because I have nothing to tell you, girlfriend.”
“Aww! Come on now, Samantha. I’ve got five minutes before I need to get out of here and pick up the kids from their after-school programs. I have to beat the traffic on Route 80. Spill, girl, I don’t have all day.”
She laughed at Jenny’s distressed expression. “There’s nothing to tell. Go get your kids.”
“Okay, I lied. Walt is picking up the kids today. Spill.” Jenny took a seat and bounced up and down in anticipation.
“It’s official, Jenny. You’re crazy. So crazy.” Samantha sunk back in her own chair and nibbled her lips as she weighed her options.
It didn’t seem to make sense to give her nosy coworker any more fuel for her wild imagination, but then there were Joel’s weird actions today…Maybe Jenny would be able to give her some advice or, hopefully, tell her she was stressing over nothing. They were friends, but work friends.
So she gave Jenny the blow-by-blow of everything that had happened. Afterward, the all-knowing smirk that crossed Jenny’s face made Samantha wish she had kept her mouth shut.
“Girl, he likes you and he just let you know he is in full pursuit. I love it!” Jenny smiled and gave a satisfied sigh. “Only a matter of time now before the two of you are dating.”
“Dating! Girl, now I know you’ve lost your mind.”
“Mark my words, girlfriend.” Jenny kept bouncing excitedly. “Ooooo, I wonder what he’s gonna do next. I have a feeling he’s gonna—”
“Enough, already. It doesn’t matter what he does next, because I intend to keep this relationship purely professional. The last thing I need is for my colleagues to start giving me strange looks because I started dating a
