act.”
“What act?” Madison questioned, her mischief taking over.
“The act of consummating your marriage on the first night, as man and wife, and there on after. He will climb on top of you, grunt around like a pig, and then be done. It is not pleasurable at all for any proper young lady,” sneered the prudish Miss Ruby. “There will be pain at first, but only the first time. Otherwise, it’s just embarrassing. It hurts one’s pride and respect they have for themselves.”
“But Miss Ruby, you’ve never been married. How do you know of such things?”
“Never mind that,” flustered Miss Ruby. “Just remember my words. It is not ladylike to enjoy what happens . . . that dreadful act of sex. He may try to coerce you into the act before you’re wed, but that’s not what a true proper lady does; only those dreadful tavern women do such sort of things.”
Madison just stared at the now angry Miss Ruby, wondering why she brought up a conversation that was taboo. Apparently her mother had a different perspective than the prudish Miss Ruby; she had nine children after all. After Miss Ruby had her say about what transpires between a man and a woman, she grew quiet again and her green color returned. Madison was thankful for Ruby’s seasickness for it allowed her to enjoy the trip in peace.
They were at sea for about an hour when there was a faint knock on the door, and it slowly opened. A thin, short figure appeared. “The Commodore requests your presence topside.”
Madison smiled and stood up. It took her a few moments to gather her bearings and balance. As she walked towards the sailor, she swayed from side-to-side with the rocking of the ship and gave a short giggle. “This takes some getting used to,” she told the sailor.
He very seriously said, “Yes, it does, Miss, but with some time it comes to you.”
Madison looked towards Miss Ruby. “Are you coming?”
“That’s quiet alright, Dear,” moaned the now greener Ruby. “I’ll wait here and make sure. . . make sure . . . ”
Before she could finish her sentence, she picked up the brass container and placed her head inside. The violent noise of her seasickness gave Madison a good reason to leave her companion quickly.
Up top, the ship was bustling with activity. The sailors were carrying out their duties efficiently. Blue coats hustled from one section to another, following the orders being shouted out by the lieutenant. She could see Andrew standing up by the quarterdeck. He was leaning over a table looking at a paper of some sort. As she climbed the steps to his location, she observed him. He was intently studying the paper. He raised one of his large hands to his face and slowly rubbed his cheek.
“Sir,” the sailor said, “Lady Madison is present.”
Andrew rose up and turned towards them. He looked at the sailor and nodded his head, “That will be all. You’re dismissed,” the Commodore told the sailor.
Madison smiled sweetly at Andrew. “Commodore, you requested my presence.”
One side of his mouth rose up in a crooked smile. “Ah, yes, my dear. I thought you might like to see The Armada from topside. You may observe the activities from the safety of being by my side.” He gazed upon her as she gave him an innocent look. “But don’t stray. I don’t know what I would do if you became injured under my care,” he said in a tone trying to convey concern.
“Yes, Commodore,” she said as she batted her eyes at him. She turned her head into the breeze. It caught a loose strand of hair and whipped it around her face. She took her hand and placed the stray lock behind her ear. The wind pressed the wispy sheer fabric of her dress against her body, outlining every curve.
McClain’s eyes slowly traveled up and down her body. He swallowed slowly and twisted his neck slightly. A purse lipped smile emerged on his face as he thought about how soon he could have his way with the delicious figure.
    His attention was
