I’m—”
    “Roxie.”
My eyes flickered to the side. Seeing Mickey, I raised my hand, waving at him. He was a sight for sore eyes. He came up beside this man. Reaching out, he shook my hand. “I see you made it okay. Didn’t have any problems at the door I hope?”
I lifted my visitor’s pass for him to see. “Nope. Not at all. And thanks for taking care of all that.”
I just showed them ID and they let me right in. I usually didn’t have any problems when I came by things like this for Griffin. Mickey always fixed that arrangement up for him and me.
“Well, Griffin’s in the back. He’s almost done for the night. They’re moving pretty quick.”
“That’s great. I bet he’s happy.” And I was too. That meant we’d have some of the night together. I wouldn’t keep him up terribly long. He was no doubt tired. “I heard he won the game last night.” He’d texted me that evening of the fact.
Mickey lifted his fist and pumped the air once. “Our all-star, right?”
“Right.” I laughed. I was so proud of my guy.
The man next to Mickey stayed silent during our exchange, and I nearly forgot about him. Mickey gestured toward me, but kept his eyes on him. “This is Roxie, Rich. Griffin’s fiancée. You were told she’d be here.”
I watched the pair rather curiously as the two exchanged a prolonged glance between each other. Suddenly, Rich’s eyes flashed. Almost like he woke up and realized where he was. He turned my way and the issue he had with me belonging here before faded away. Probably because he now knew I did and wasn’t just wandering around. He grabbed my hand, shaking hard. “Roxie. Of course. Pardon me.”
He shook so hard I waved my hand out a bit after he let go. “No problem. I mean, it’s not like you knew who to look for.”
Folding his hands across his chest, he nodded with that. “I definitely hadn’t.” He tilted his head back and chuckled. “People are swarming the set you know.”
“Yes,” I agreed but I had to say I didn’t see many. The set was open, a large white background with lights shining on it. Of course they had the photographer and his assistants but I’d seen bigger shoots. This seemed to be very much like Rich said, a closed set.
“Well, let me guide you over,” Rich said, motioning me forward with his hand behind me. Though he didn’t touch me. Just the air. “They’re starting up again soon.”
I said goodbye to Mickey, and though he gave that professional Mickey smile something seemed different tonight. It felt kind of forced and he exchanged yet another glance with Rich as he guided me away. So quick I would have missed it if hadn’t been watching. Though I made it seem like I hadn’t. Perhaps it was nothing.
“He’s had a long night,” Rich said behind me. He came to a stop to the right of the photographer, to the back of him and out of the way. I took his lead and did the same, settling my hands at my waist. Folding his arms over his chest, Rich glanced at me. “Long couple of days you know. He’ll probably hit the hay as soon as he’s home.”
“Um, yeah. But he loves his job so that makes it easier.”
“Right. Right,” he agreed, his gaze lingering in my direction a second before facing forward. Though he looked over and behind me like something caught his attention. “So uh, where did you guys meet?”
    “College.”
He nodded at that. “College. That’s great. Great. And um, how long did you say you’ve been together?”
I hadn’t, but I entertained him. “Since senior year.”
“Ah, seniors. And Griffin, he went pro right after, right? Not that long ago I guess.”
My lips pursed a bit. “Correct.”
    “Nice. Nice.”
The photographer gave word and the people on set scattered off it and into position. I was undeniably relieved. This kept which I now knew to be Griffin’s new publicist’s questions at bay for the time being. I didn’t really understand his fascination with us, but frankly, I
