Gabi asked, peering up at her. âFine. Donât blame me when youâre cursed.â
Gabi gave me one last look and then she made a break for it.
I had no choice. I chased after her.
âWait up,â I yelled. It was a good thing she was a horrible runner. I was able to catch right up.
âIâll scream,â she warned, âif you come any closer.â
âFine,â I said. âI donât want to hurt you. I just want everything back to normal.â
âThis is normal,â she said.
âNo, itâs not. Weâre friends, remember? Do you even know why you hate me?â I wanted to move toward her. But I was afraid sheâd make a scene. So I stayed put.
Gabi ticked off reasons on her fingers. âYou use your powers on me, youâre dangerous, you ditched me for Courtney a couple of months ago, youâre selfish, and you totally humiliated me in front of Marc and Lance Gold.â
It might have been the spell talking, but that didnât mean it wasnât true. Gabi was right. I had been awful. I owed her. I was going to see that she was happy if it was the last thing I ever did. âIâd never hurt you. Not on purpose. Never.â
âWell, you did.â
âIâm sorry. It wonât happen again,â I promised. And it wouldnât. I was going to make everything up to her. Starting with Lance.
âWhy should I believe you?â
âBecause weâre best friends.â
She snorted. âNot really.â
âThen because you know my secret. I canât risk you telling anyone else. Promise not to, and Iâll leave you alone.â
Gabi bit her lip.
âPlease,â I said.
âOkay. But Iâm only doing it so I donât have to deal with you ever again.â
âYou donât really mean that.â
I didnât even realize that I took a step forward until Gabi screamed my name.
âAngel Garrett, youâre already breaking your promise.â
âIâm not, Iâm sorry. It was an accident.â I backed up. âSee, Iâm moving away.â
But there wasnât really anywhere for me to go. Because Gabiâs scream had attracted a crowd. A whole bunch of people were headed our way.
âDid you say Angel?â someone I didnât even recognize asked.
âYes!â another cheered. âI love her.â
âMove,â Courtney elbowed them. âDonât you see Iâm trying to get through?â
âGet away while you can,â Gabi said.
âWhatâs your problem?â Courtney sneered. âWell, other than the obvious ones like that youâre a complete loser. But I would have thought youâd be jumping up and down to see Angel.â Courtney may have had newfound feelings for me, but the ones she had for Gabi were the same as always. Pure contempt.
âNot quite,â Gabi said. âSheâs just like you . Evil.â
âYou think Iâm like Angel?â Courtney asked, standing even straighter. âI guess even losers know greatness when they see it.â
âPlease,â Gabi said. âSheâs not great. Sheâs awful.â She turned to Cole. âYou were right to dump her before.â
Sometimes I truly hated my powers.
âSheâs not awful,â Cole said, squeezing his way through the fan club that formed around me. âSheâs Angel. Sheâs . . .â He didnât finish. Instead he just leaned in and kissed me. In front of everyone.
âNot fair,â Reid said. âI want to kiss her.â The same Reid who was dating Lana Perkins.
Crazy.
I pulled away from him. Donât get me wrong. I liked when he kissed me. And when he stuck up for me. Only this time it didnât feel like I was kissing Cole. More like a pod person. Like I was in one of those body-snatcher movies. Where someone looked like Cole and sounded like Cole, but wasnât actually Cole.
