seemed to despise her only a little less than he had before. She wondered if she was crazy to trust him, then winced at her word choice.
No, she told herself. Not crazy. Under the circumstances, trusting Tanner only made sense.
She was still working on convincing herself when he walked into the kitchen to pour himself more coffee. She watched his easy movements, the bunch and release of muscles. In another world, at another time, she would have found him attractive and intriguing. Now he was just a mystery.
âWhy are you doing this?â she asked.
He glanced from her to the pot he held. âI like coffee.â
She held in a smile. âNo, why are you helping me?â
âI was hired to rescue you, not turn you over to a potential killer. Until I know itâs safe to let you go, Iâll keep you here.â
Pretty much what sheâd figured. âA man of honor?â she asked.
âThatâs pushing it.â
âBut youâre doing the right thing.â
He raised his eyebrows. âThat has yet to be determined.â
âSo you think I could still be lying.â
âAbout some things. You were right about Hilliard not paying his bills. He has a long trail of angry creditors. A few of them have pursued legal action.â
âI told you that,â she reminded him. âThe lawsuits were dismissed.â
âNot all of them, and not necessarily for legal reasons.â
She didnât like the sound of that. âMeaning?â
âSometimes the person pursuing the suit disappeared.â
Her chest tightened and she tasted fear. âHe doesnât like people who get in his way,â she said, hating to have that confirmed.
âApparently not.â
âI know heâs a threat to me. What about my father?â she asked.
âHilliard needs him.â
âFor now.â
Tanner shrugged.
âCan you protect him?â she asked. âWould you letme hire you to do that? If you could get a couple of guys into the company, just to hang around himâ¦â
âIâll check into it.â
âI can pay you.â
He sipped his coffee. âIâm not questioning that.â
Some of her tension eased. If Tanner would look after her father, she wouldnât have to worry about him. Sure, Christopher needed Blaine in the short term, but for how long? And then what?
âI hate this,â she said. âI hate that heâs in my life. Just thinking about him makes my skin crawl.â
âFor what itâs worth, he didnât go to the police about me keeping you here,â Tanner said. âHe also hasnât tried to get in touch with me.â
She let the news sink in. âIf my ex-husband didnât go to the authorities about you holding on to me, that has to mean something.â
âItâs helping your case,â he admitted.
âYouâre a very stubborn man.â
âIâm careful.â
If he kept her alive, she wasnât going to complain about his need to be cautious.
âIâm going to go crazy here with nothing to do,â she said. âI think we should argue about my computer again.â
He surprised her by smiling. âYou willing to take me on?â
She swallowed more coffee before offering a brazen, âAbsolutely.â
âWhat if you piss me off so much that I wonât help you?â
She dismissed the suggestion with a shrug. âYoukept me here and safe, even though you donât like me. I doubt annoying you about my computer is going to make a difference. You donât operate that way.â
âHow do I operate?â
âIâm not completely sure, but I know youâre not slimy.â
He studied her for several minutes before speaking. âI reserve the right to review your e-mail. Iâll also download your hard disk and look it over.â
Relief swept through her. âRead it all twice, I donât care. I just want
