and then thought about the man lying on his balcony. My grin faded. “That poor guy out there…he’s dead, isn’t he?”
“I’m almost certain he is,” Luke said.
    “What do you think happened?”
“Hard to say.” His eyes roamed over my body again. “Speaking of hard, I am. Very. You should really get dressed if you’re going to.”
I gave him a quick kiss and then went over to the closet. I took out a silk, button-down shirtdress and put it on. I turned and looked at Luke as I buttoned the dress. I wanted him to be fully aware that I wasn’t wearing anything beneath the dress.
He smiled. “It’s gonna be a long day.”
    “Yes, it is.”
There was a knock on our hotel room door. Luke answered it as I slipped on a pair of wedge sandals.
    “Good morning, Mr. Fontaine.”
    It was the security guard.
“Good morning,” Luke said. “Come in.”
“I’m sorry to disturb you so early.” The security guard stepped into our room. “But I have a couple questions for you.” He looked at me. His eyes raked down and back up my body. “For…uh…for both of you.”
I smiled. “Of course.” Could he tell I wasn’t wearing anything under the blue silk dress? Maybe. I was tempted to go over and tap the bottom of his chin to remind him to close his mouth. “What do you want to know, officer?”
Luke arched a brow at me and grinned. I got the feeling we’d be playing the officer and the bad girl later today.
“When…uh…did….” The guard looked away from me and concentrated on Luke. “You called as soon as you noticed the man on the balcony below you, right?”
    “Yes, I did,” Luke answered.
“Well, we’ve called the police, and they’re on their way,” said the guard. “A couple of our guys are already with the body. Um…I saw that you guys have been here a couple days. Have you ever met the man in the room below you?”
“No. We haven’t been socializing all that much.” Luke glanced at me.
“Of course.” The guard’s eyes cut to me and then down at the carpet.
He was young and seemed embarrassed.
“Well…thank you for giving me your statement,” he said. “The police might still want to talk with you.”
I walked over and placed my hand on his shoulder. He started at the contact, looked at me, and then looked at Luke. The poor thing probably thought I was going to try to get him to engage in a threesome or something.
I smiled. “Thank you so much for your help. We appreciate your stopping by.”
    “Yes…of course…you’re welcome,” he stammered.
    “Bye,” I said.
“Um…yeah.” He backed up, turned, and hurried out the door.
    Luke chuckled. “Aren’t you ashamed?”
“Not in the least. Let’s go down and eat breakfast and then head over to that adult toy store.”

Chapter Two

During breakfast, Luke and I decided it would be more fun to meet at the adult toy store than to go there together. That way, we could shop on our own, pretend we didn’t know each other already, and then meet back up at the hotel. Sounds crazy, I know, but part of the fun for us in Hawaii was that we didn’t know anyone and could misbehave without it coming back to bite us in the butt…Luke especially.
Luke was the CEO of Fontaine Enterprises, a multi-faceted corporation that dabbled in everything from medical supplies to water purification systems. He was only known in certain circles, and the media didn’t hound him as it would a celebrity, but he didn’t need the hassle of any bad publicity.
I was a freelance journalist. Bad publicity for me might have even been a good thing. At least, it would’ve gotten me recognized.
I first met Luke when I interviewed him for an article for an entrepreneurial magazine. We met, hit it off, began dating, and the rest was history.
I had to admit, I felt a little weird walking to the adult toy store by myself wearing nothing but my wedge hills and blue silk dress. It was breezy, and I was self-conscious about the
