opening spots for new kids.
âJust hang in there, boys,â said Coach Pellugi. âYouâll get your chance to play.â He walked into the office, leaving the group of disappointed boys standing there.
That was when Jason showed up. âYo, dudes!â he said, a big smile on his face. âDid you make the starting team?â
Tiki and Ronde looked down at the floor and shook their heads.
âAw, man . . . Well, donât take it too hard. Not everybody can be a starter right off the bat.â
He looked up at the list, checking for his own name. Then he found it. âThird team,â he cried. âNo way! No possible way!â
Jasonâs usually pale face got as red as a chili pepper. He slammed his book bag on the ground. The zipper popped open, and all his books scattered across the floor, but he didnât even bother to pick them up.
âThis stinks so bad!â he said, pounding on the list with his fist. âMan, I am not riding the bench for the whole season, just so I can watch some other kid play quarterback just because heâs an eighth grader!â
âBut Jason,â Tiki began, âyou just said we should be patientââ
âYeah, well, I take it all back,â said Jason. âThatâs for losers. Not for me.â
âJason, what else can we do but be patient?â Ronde asked. âThatâs just the way it is.â
âNot for me it isnât,â said Jason. âI was the best quarterback at both practices. And donât give me that âMatt Claytonâ baloney. He is still in a cast. I should have been the starter, hands down, and you know it!â
âHey, man, chill out,â Tiki advised him. âQuit making a scene, all right?â
Teachers were popping their heads out of the office to see what all the commotion was about.
âYou chill out,â Jason said, kicking his book bag one more time before bending down to gather up his stuff. âIâm outta here.â
âHuh?â
âI quit this stupid team,â Jason said, stuffing his books and papers back into his bag any which way. âIâm gonna try out for some other team, where Iâll actually get to play. If you two idiots want to put up with this garbage, go ahead. Thatâs your problem.â
He stormed off down the hall, just as the early bell rang, warning everyone that it was time to head to first period classes.
âWhoa,â Ronde said. âIâve never seen Jason so ticked off.â
âNo lie,â Tiki agreed. âHey, manâyou think heâs right?â
Ronde shook his head. âI know how he feels, though. I mean, itâs embarrassingâAdam and Paco make the starting team, and weâre all riding the bench?â
âI hear you.â Tiki didnât know how he was ever going to face Adam and Paco. Even worse, he couldnât bear the idea of showing up for games just to sit on the bench the whole game.
Today was already the worst day of his life, Tiki thought. And it was only just beginning!
His football dreams were ruined. If he and Ronde couldnât even make second team, let alone first, how were they ever going to make it all the way to the NFL?
âMaybe Jasonâs right,â Ronde said. âMaybe we should quit the team. I mean, if we tried out for soccer, or lacrosse or something, we could probably start right away.â
âSoccer? Lacrosse?â
âYeah, man, theyâre pretty coolâand not that many kids try out.â
Tiki shook his head. âRonde, when we sit around thinking about what we want to do when we grow up, we donât think about playing pro soccer.â
Ronde sighed. âNo, I guess not.â
âDoes pro lacrosse even exist? I donât think so.â
âDoubt it.â
âMaybe we should just chill out. Remember what Coach Pellugi saidâand Matt Clayton, too. Letâs just
