you know how much he paid for that thing? My life is over!â She picked up a notebook and shook it, just in case the iPhone had wedged itself between the pages.
âDo you put your book bag on the back of your desk, or under it?â asked Dana.
âUsually behind me.â She paused. âDo you think someone took it?â
âWell, letâs figure out who sits behind you in each class,â November reasoned.
âI donât know! I canât think!â Arielle cried out. âWait. In math, itâs Roscoe Robinson. Heâs actually in my chemistry class too, but he sits on the other side of the room in there. Heâs cool, even though I think he copies my math papers. But he wouldnât have taken itâhe told me he got one for Christmas.â
âLucky dude,â Olivia said. âWhat about art class?â
âWe put our bags on a shelf on one side of the room. Theyâre in full view of everybody all the time.â
âOkay, what about chemistryâyou got Pringle, right?â Dana asked. âWho sits behind you in there?â
âKofi,â she said, looking away.
Dana inhaled. âHey, look, my Kofi is scrapinâ quarters together right now, but heâs no thief,â she snapped.
âOh, I know that, Dana! I wasnât implyingâ¦â Her heart sank even furtherâshe didnât want to make Dana mad at her on the day she decided to reach out and make up.
Dana looked at her sharply. âJust so weâre straight.â
Arielle nodded vigorously. âLetâs seeâtoday Miss Pringle had us doing labs, trying to make up the time we lost during the fire drill. Everybody was out of their seats, walking around most of the period.â
âThatâs not good. It could have been anybody.â
âSo that just leaves world history. Who sits behind you in there?â asked Olivia.
âOsrick Wardley.â Arielleâs thoughts flashed to Osrick lying stripped and humiliated, Osrick huddled in his coat. She really hoped the poor guy wasnât the thief.
ARIELLE
CHAPTER 8
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8
ARIELLE STUFFED EVERYTHING BACK INTO her book bag. âIâm going to report this to the principal.â She hesitated, and then looked at the girls who had extended that thin thread of friendship. She wasnât sure how far to test it. âWill you come with me? Please?â she added.
âWeâre here for you, girlfriend,â Dana said, as if speaking for the group. âLetâs go.â
âThank you. You donât know how much this means to me.â She was near tears. She hoped they didnât notice.
âYou think it was Weird Osrick?â November asked as they stood to leave. âIâve known him since sixth grade. Heâs a little different, but Iâve never known him to steal anything.â
âHe likes electronic stuffâmaybe it was too much of a temptation,â Arielle said slowly, thinking it through.
âOsrick could probably build an iPhone from bubblegum and batteries if he wanted to,â said Olivia. âThe kid is a genius. I heard his IQ is pushinâ something like two hundred.â
âAll I know is he was probably the last to see it, and now itâs gone,â Arielle said as they got to the principalâs office. The thought made her increasingly uncomfortable.
âYouâre not a hundred percent sure of that, Arielle,â Olivia said, voicing Arielleâs very thoughts.
Rosa Gonzalez, who worked as a student aide for Mrs. Sherman, sat at the desk outside her door. âHow can I help you?â she asked officiously, picking up a pencil and a notepad.
âWe need to see Mrs. Sherman right away,â Arielle explained.
âAnd this is in regards toâ¦â Rosa put the pencil behind her ear.
âOh, come on, Rosa,â said Dana impatiently.
Mrs. Sherman opened her office door then and said to them,
