now. The man looks like a Nubian pharaoh with a gangster twist.
âJayd!â Kamal screams, running straight into me, almost knocking me down.
âHey, lil man,â I say, embracing his eight-year-old body. When Raheem and I were together, Kamal was in preschool and I treated him like my son.
âAre you still working up the hill at Simply Wholesome?â Kamal asks, nodding his head toward my job, which is within walking distance from here. Simply Wholesome isnât Raheem or Nigelâs vibe: Itâs too pretentious. They much prefer Pannâs chill atmosphere up La Cienega.
âYes, I am.â
âDid you bring me something to eat?â he asks, bringing back memories of sharing patties and burritos with him and his big brother, whoâs just staring at me through the doorway.
Finally, Raheem hangs up his phone and steps onto the porch, looking at me hard and making me even more nervous. I can smell his Egyptian Musk oil from the bottom of the porch steps. Nigel, noticing the vibe, walks up the porch steps past me to greet his homeboy.
âWhatâs up, man? We ready to make them beats?â he says, breaking the ice.
âYeah, man. Weâre ready.â Raheem steps down to move Kamal out of the way before picking me up.
âHey, Raheem,â I say, completely engulfed in the best bear hug of my life. With my feet off the ground, I feel light as air in his arms. God, this man feels like heaven.
âHey, Jayd,â he says into my neck. His lips are still as smooth as Mamaâs shea butter. Why did I come here? Iâm still weak for this man and that ainât good.
âAre you and my brother back together now?â Kamal says, tugging at my pants leg before Raheem releases me from his tight grip.
âLil man, thatâs none of your business,â I say. âBut no, weâre not.â Raheem looks a little hurt by my definitive answer. But, I want to make sure everyone knows Iâm no longer available to him or any other man, for that matter. Jeremyâs the only man for me right now. And, after all the drama weâve been through to be together in the past few weeks, Iâm not giving him up for anyone. Least of all another ex.
âYou look good. Smaller, but still as fine as ever,â he says, first looking at my breasts, then the rest of me. âHow you feeling?â
âIâm feeling fine. And, youâre not looking so bad yourself. What did you do, take some growth pills or something?â
âNow you know being tall is in my DNA. It just took me a while to catch up,â he says, directing Kamal into the house. Nigel and I follow right behind them.
âAlright, lil man. Itâs time for bed,â Raheem says, ushering Kamal into the hallway toward the bedrooms.
âBut, Rah, itâs only ten. And, Jayd just got here,â Kamal whines. âI havenât seen her since I was little.â
âYouâre still little, which is why your ass has to go to bed, now. Youâre too young to hang with the big boys,â he says, picking Kamal up in the air and throwing him over his shoulders like a sack of potatoes.
âPut me down. You donât want none of this, man!â Kamal screams, playfully hitting his brotherâs back.
âSay goodnight. And, Iâm sure youâll see Jayd again soon,â Raheem says, looking at me from the corner of his eye. Westingle brothas have no self-esteem issues. âYâall make yourselves comfortable and Iâll be right back.â
As Nigel and I walk farther into the house, I see truly not much has changed. Directly ahead of us in the living room is still the same oversize cream leather couch with the huge aquarium right behind it. The big, flat-screen television is new, though.
âJayd, you want something to drink?â Nigel says, walking through the dining room and into the kitchen, toward the bar. âYou know Tasha keeps the house
