talking to her or to Aaron â and she wasnât about to ask.
âItâs the pipsqueak pansy,â Aaron shouted, finally recognizing Pip, and he gave Pip another shove, knocking him to the ground.
âStop
saying
that!â Skye heard herself object loudly.
âHe tried to trick us,â Cord yelled, furious, and, eager to erase his earlier humiliation, he drew his leg back as if he were about to attempt to kick a field goal. And thenâ
thud
! Cordâs foot connected with Pipâs ribs.
âHey,â Danko and Kee objected simultaneously.
â
Uhh
,â Pip groaned as the air was knocked out of him,and he tried to roll away from the blows that were sure to follow.
âStop that!â Skye cried, panicked.
âQuit it, dude. You made your point,â Kee said to Cord, grabbing his arm and pulling him away from Pip.
But it was Aaronâs leg that was going back for the kick this time.
This was really, really happening, Skye told herself, stunned.
â
Hey
,â a manâs voice shouted from across the street, and suddenly, the beam of light from a powerful flashlight swept across their faces. âWhat the heck is going on over there?â
âThey â they were beating my friend up for no reason,â Skye cried, her words tumbling out into the night.
âWe were not,â Cord said, sounding both innocent and outraged.
âYeah,â Aaron said. âAnd I live around here.â
The flashlight beam rested on Aaronâs face for a moment. âOh, itâs you,â the man said as he approached the group of kids, his voice flat and unsurprised.
âHi, Mr. Walters,â Aaron said with no change in his expression. âThese kids were making a lot of noise, and wejust stopped by to see if anything was the matter.â
âYou guys are whatâs the matter,â Skye exclaimed, hoping like crazy she wasnât about to start crying. âWe were just standing here! Are you okay, Pip?â
As Pip struggled to his feet, Skye could make out two orange balloons â Pipâs former Dolly Parton chest, she supposed â bouncing across the lawn like escaping ghosts. âIâm fine,â Pip said. He tried to stand up straight, but Skye could tell by the way he clutched his side that he was in pain.
âAre you okay, son?â the man with the flashlight asked, echoing Skye.
âIâm fine,â Pip said again.
âSee?â Aaron said to the man â in a tone of voice that was just this side of rude, in Skyeâs opinion. âEverythingâs great.â
âLetâs go,â Kee murmured, taking a few steps back, and Danko and Cord stepped back, too. But Aaron didnât move.
âIâll be keeping my eye on you, Mr. Petterson,â the man said to Aaron. âCâmon, kids,â he said, turning to Pip and Skye. âIâll walk you to the Berrigansâ front door.â
âBuh-bye,â Aaron called out after them, his voice fake-nice, cheerful, and threatening â all at the same time. âSee you guys at school!â
So much for being invisible, Skye thought, resigned to whatever was going to happen next.
