last sigh was finished.
He pulled back. Gave a small laugh. Looked away, as if by doing that she wouldn’t notice the hand he ran over his face. “Interesting way to end the night, huh?” he asked in a voice not quite yet steady.
“I’ve never had better,” and he gave her a tender look, his eyes soft and grateful on hers.
He took a deep breath. Exhaled sharply. “What now?”
“Now? Now we decide.” She wrapped her arms around her waist, because even as gratitude filled her for Iron sharing with her, this next step was it . All in, and while part of her wanted to step away, to let tonight’s revelation convince her to give things more time, that couldn’t happen. It was true two days ago, and it was still true now. This was the intersection of their relationship, and a path needed to be taken. “I love you, and I always have. It hasn’t faded ever, and it’s not going to. I know exactly what it means to be the mate of a werewolf and to be a member of the pack – at least, as much as someone can know looking in from the outside – and I want that with you.”
Iron stuffed his hands into his pockets, and the play of emotions running across his face went too fast for her to get a grasp on what thoughts held the deepest part of his brain.
All in, right? Yeah. All in. “But I’m not some damsel-in-distress waiting for her knight. What I want, I get. I wanted to be a doctor, so I’m a doctor. And with or without you, I’m going to be part of the pack. I’ve already discussed it with Dr. Stevens. When my residency is over, I’m taking over as pack doctor.”
Now Iron’s head moved so fast she half expected him to complain of whiplash. “How the hell did I never hear about this? I’m fucking beta of the pack.”
“Well, Steel doesn’t know and he’s alpha,” she responded, and this time the open-mouth fish look was more comical than anything, though she held it together to not laugh. Oh yes, Iron needed to discover she knew a hell of a lot about what he thought of as his little secret. “I told Stevens not to let anyone know because I didn’t want to hear any asinine reasons why it was a bad idea, and he agreed. He’s ready to retire, but he put it off because he knows I’m coming.”
Now Iron started pacing, muttering in male outrage, “I can’t believe this shit.”
“Believe it. This is how it’s going to be. I’m the pack doctor as soon as my residency is finished. If you pull your head out of your ass and mate me, awesome. If you don’t mate me this mating season, I’m done. I’ll always be your friend – there’s too much history between us for that ever to change – but I’m not pining away because I don’t have you. Trust me, as much as I like fucking, I’m going to find someone so good with his dick he has me howling like I’m a born wolf–”
In two quick strides Iron was pulling her to him, his lip curled up in a silent snarl. “Don’t talk about anyone else fucking you.”
“If you’re not going to do it, someone damn sure is. So what’s your decision?”
A cascade of emotions swept across his face, a too-quick succession that Bella couldn’t follow, but in the end determination hardened his features and a soul-deep desire fired up his eyes. He bent his head to her neck, inhaling deep and long. “Mine, Isabella. You are fucking mine, and no one gets to touch you again. You understand that? It’s me and me only, for the rest of your life.”
“Why should the rest of my life be any different from the first of it? Idiot. It’s always been you, and it’s your fault anyone else was beside me before now.”
    “I’m an idiot.”
    “Fuck right you are.”
    “I’m not an idiot anymore.”
“Then mate me.” The low, breathy quality to her voice had an answering growl coming from the back of his throat.
Iron mouthed at her throat, his teeth making occasional appearances, as if now that he was permitted to mark her, he couldn’t keep them away
