behind her.
âAre you out of your, mind?â she asked George in a harsh whisper. âSome of my Lord Provostâs men do know what you look like!â
âUpset for my safety?â the thief chuckled. âIâm touched.â
âYouâre touched in the head,â Alanna snapped. âAnyway, since youâre here, why are you here?â
âI thought you mightnât get the chance to come down to the city before you rode out, and I wanted a word with you. But you were wanting to ask me somethinâ.â
Alanna showed him the bur. âStefan found this in Duke Garethâs saddle blanket. He says a new man saddled the Dukeâs horse, then vanished.â
âAnd you suspect foul play,â George prodded.
âOf course I do. But it doesnât make sense. Why should Tusaine go to the trouble of stopping Duke Gareth leading the army? That wonât keep us from marching the day after tomorrow.â
George shook his head. âYouâre thinkinâ like a warrior. Think like a plotter. There might be reasons closer to home as to why Duke Gareth fell from his beast.â
âCloser to home?â Alanna asked.
âWho benefits?â George wanted to know. âAnd stop thinkinâ of fightinâ: start thinkinâ of power. Who gains the most power from His Graceâs âaccidentâ?â
Alanna, about to retort that no one gained, remembered the man King Roald had appointed to Duke Garethâs place. Suddenly she swayed, feeling ill.
âNot a commander youâll be trustinâ in the field, is he?â the thief asked softly.
Alanna was trembling. âI have to think about this.â
George nodded. âThink on it all you may please,â he said. âAnd watch where he places Jonathan and those loyal to Jonathan.â He smoothed a hand over her coppery hair. âWould that I didnât have to stay here and keep my own in line. I mislike sendinâ you there with no one to help, but thereâs nothinâ for it. Iâd be a dead Rogue if I turned my back on my folk for as long as youâll be gone. A week or two, maybe. But not a month and more.â
Alanna smiled at him, wishing he could go with her. Things were always clearer when George was around. âIâll be all right,â she said with false assurance. âFaithful will be with me, and if things get bad Iâll go to Myles. Heâs smart enough for three of us.â
George smiled down at her, his hazel eyes still worried. âThat he is. âTwill have to do. Watch for more accidents.â
âI donât think He wants to hurt me,â Alanna demurred. âJust learn my secret.â
âI believe he wants you out of the way before he goes further with his plans.â
Alanna had to laugh. âWhat threat could Ipossibly be to him ? No, Iâm not as suspicious as you are, George. It must come from your line of work.â
Sensing she wanted to change the subject, George shrugged. âMayhap when Jon is king Iâll be givinâ up my work.â
Alanna stared at him. âYouâre joking, surely.â
The tall thief sank into a chair, watching her intently. âIâm thinkinâ of turninâ respectable and takinâ me a wife.â
Alanna gave an ungentlemanly snort. âI like that!â
He never looked away from her. âThings look different as a man gets older.â
Alanna sat on a table, swinging her feet. âIâm just having trouble seeing you turn decent citizen. Who will you give your collection of ears to? And what trade will you take up? Jewel-selling? Returning what you stole, for a fee, of course?â
âIâm in no hurry. King Roald is a young man still. You see,â he went on, âIâm waitinâ for my chosen bride to grow up. She couldnât be some citizenâs daughter, could she? She must be a free soul who knows my past,
