to feel like he can’t call on me if he needs backup.”
“I hate his job! I hate that it puts both of
you in danger.”
“Normally, I’m in no more danger than any
other person. This is a fucked up situation, love. Ronan’s cover
has been so blown, who knows if he’ll be able to go undercover
again anytime soon. We just need to get through this and protect
Ronan.”
“What about you? Who’s going to protect
you?”
“I’m supposed to be protecting you, a
grá.”
“It’s not me they want Ian, it’s Ronan and,
by default, you.”
No way in hell was he telling her that this
would put her in more danger if they were caught. If these goons
did catch up with them, they’d either think Ian was Ronan or they’d
use him to get at his brother. Kara was of no value and with people
like this, that just made her a liability. They wouldn’t think
twice about shooting her and leaving her for dead. The thought made
his blood boil and his stomach lurch.
He couldn’t let anything happen to Kara.
Sure, Ronan was the reason they were in this mess, but if she
didn’t have Ian as a partner she also would have been safe. He
never imagined he’d be the one to put her in danger. The thought of
backing away from her when this was all over flitted through his
mind. He was just selfish enough to admit that he’d rather protect
her from any future threats than have to walk away from her.
Once they left the motel, they found a small
grocery store where they got lunchmeat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes,
mayonnaise, ice, and some snacks. After that they set out in search
of a new place to hide. They ended up driving around a lot through
back roads along the shore of Lake Michigan.
Ian was pretty secure that they weren’t being
watched or followed, but in a situation like this, you could never
be too safe. When they came across some small cabins by the lake
advertising a vacancy, he pulled into a dirt driveway. Leaving Kara
in the car, Ian quickly secured a cabin with a deposit and the
nightly fee. The place was more of a campground with cabins than
anything so the man didn’t even raise an eyebrow at Ian paying in
cash.
As soon as they were back settled in the
cabin, Ronan called to check in and say all was well. Once he was
off the phone, Ian told Kara he needed a shower. It was true in
more ways than one. He knew Kara was watching TV in the bed as he
struggled with what to do. He was considering bringing a sleeping
bag into the cabin so he could sleep on the floor. Being in bed
with Kara might be too much. Ever since he’d put that ring on his
finger, his mind kept chanting mianach, mianach, mianach. He wanted
her to be his, but he had to figure out exactly what that meant and
what the chances were that she’d say yes.
As he stood under the hot water of the
shower, Ian thought about Kara lying in the bed. He pictured her in
that tight little T-shirt and some of those new panties she had
bought with the lace. Or better yet, in nothing at all. That was
all it took. He knew the shape of her body and he remembered
earlier today when his chest had been pressed against hers. He’d
felt the softness of her as she cushioned him. He’d felt her
nipples harden against him.
He bit back a groan as he moved his hand up
and down his erection. He leaned one hand against the wall of the
shower as he used his other hand to jack himself off. All the while
thinking about Kara and what it would feel like if it were her hand
on him or her mouth moving wetly up and down his shaft. When he
thought about what it would feel like to plunge inside of her, his
hand squeezed a little tighter and moved a little faster until he
came. He leaned on the arm braced against the wall as he waited for
more strength to return to his legs. This would have to become a
daily routine while he and Kara were sharing a room.
Kara heard a grunt from the shower and
wondered if Ian was OK. She was getting so nervous she was half
sure she’d chicken out on this
