wandered into their domain. He wore a T-shirt with a Sharpie drawing of a pig on it. (The drawing was pretty awesome.) The pig wore a cape and held a crossbow. The words âBULLY MEâ were written above the pig. The words âPIG BOYâ were written below the drawing.
Gus stopped in mid-sentence and took in Tommyâs odd presence. âCan I help you?â Gus asked.
Tommy didnât look at Gus. He addressed me. âItâs working,â he said.
âIt is?â I asked.
âNobodyâs dicked me over all week. Theyâre running scared.â
âWho are you?â Gus asked.
âPig Boy,â Tommy said. âIâm Feltonâs sidekick.â
I nodded. Iâd slept better since I told Tommy he could be my sidekick. âGus,â I said. âMeet Tommy. Heâs myâ¦â
âSidekick,â Tommy repeated.
âAnd mentee,â I said.
âWow,â Gus said.
Tommy nodded solemnly. âRunning scared,â he repeated. Then he turned and wobbled back down the hall. My football number, 34, was drawn on his back. He knew more about me than I thought.
Gus turned to me. âYouâre protecting him?â
âYes.â
âThatâs pretty cool,â he said.
Chapter 14
The End of the Fall
School ended for two weeks. Winter break. Iâd be leaving town to visit Andrew and Grandpa Stan and Tovi, my cousin, which I was psyched about because college questions would go away and Iâd be with family in a not-empty house.
And Tommyâs Pig Boy thing had calmed me down. Heâd given me a purpose! So before leaving for Florida the next morning, I agreed to be social. (I hadnât done anything with anybody since Thanksgiving.)
I went to Dubuque, Iowa, to walk around the mall there with Abby Sauter and Karpinski. Karpinski drove. I sat in the back.
On the way, Abby turned to me and said, âMy little brother told me youâre protecting some kid in his class.â
âMe?â I asked. âOr do you mean Karpinski?â
âHa!â Abby laughed.
âI donât do shit for children,â Karpinski said. âI donât like children. Theyâre really dirty, have you noticed? Dirty hands and shit.â
âThatâs nice of you, Felton,â Abby said. âKeeping a young man safe from terror in the halls of Bluffton High.â
âYes,â I said. âItâs my duty.â
âWhat kid?â Karpinski asked.
âThat pig kid,â Abby said.
âLittle fat ass?â Karpinski asked.
âNo,â I said. âTommy Bode. Heâs not a little fat ass.â
âHeâs pretty fat,â Karpinski said.
âNolan doesnât like him,â Abby said.
âNo shit. Nolan kicked him in the stomach,â I said. âI saw him do it.â
âNolan has problems,â Abby said. âThatâs when your hand bled?â she asked.
I nodded. âHe pissed me off.â
âYeah, Nolanâs not doing so well,â Abby said. âHeâs not soâ¦â Abby trailed off.
âWhy? Whatâs wrong with Nolan?â I asked. What did Nolan have to worry about?
âIâd probably kick that little fat ass in the stomach,â Karpinski said. âIâm a dick.â
I looked at Karpinski. His jock eyes twinkled.
âItâs my job,â Karpinski said. âI have to keep the dipshits in line.â
âItâs my job to protect them.â
âThereâs gonna be some trouble, man. Weâre going to have to fight!â Karpinski laughed.
âYouâre a dick,â I said.
âAlways have been, always will be,â Karpinski said.
âYou just figure that out, Felton?â Abby smiled.
âNo,â I whispered.
âAbby, you drinking peach schnapps or something?â Karpinski asked. âWhatâs that smell?â
âI donât know,â Abby mumbled.
