âI think I read it once or twice,â he deadpanned.
She rolled her eyes. âOkay, Al Sanders. Iâm the toughest first-grade teacher at Greenfield Elementary. I hope you know what youâre getting into.â
He didnât have a clue, but as he watched the light in her eyes and the wind through her hair, he sure as hell wanted to find out.
Â
âNobody else will do it,â Chad said. âSo youâve got to.â
Katherine wavered, then thought about the greased flagpole and shook her head. âThis was your lunatic idea. Find someone else. There must be a teenager in that crowd whose fondest wish is to climb on top of a bunch of men and get a tin can off the top of a greased flagpole.â
âIâve already tried. Besides, you asked me to come up with something new and physically challenging. The least you can do is show some support.â
Chad was marginally right, she knew. Katherine exhaled with such force, it ruffled her bangs. âThereâs got to be somebody,â she muttered.
Chad must have sensed her weakening. âYou. Youâre light and agile. Youâve got great balance. Theââ
âThe two teams are ready,â Al said from the open doorway. âHave you found someone to climb to the top yet?â
Chad threw Katherine a meaningful glance. âYes, but sheâs reluctant.â
Just seeing Al brought a flutter to her stomach. She deliberately looked away from him. âOkay, Chad. Iâll do it. But you owe me for this one.â
Al looked from Chad to Katherine, and an expression of disbelief crossed his face. âNot Katherine.â
Chad shrugged. âSheâs perfect for the job. She used to take gymnastics. Sheâs light and agile. Plus, the guests will love it.â
Al dismissed it. âShe might get hurt. Weâll get someone else. She can be the referee.â
âWeâll have some people to spot,â Chad argued.
âAnd what if they miss?â
âJust a minute.â Katherine frowned. They were talking about her as if she werenât there. âIâve already told Chad Iâd do it. Youâre not telling me I canât, are you?â
âYou might get hurt,â Al explained. âYouâre not strong enough.â
Chad snickered.
Katherine and Al glared at him.
He cleared his throat, stifling his amusement. âI, uh, think Iâll go outside with the guests.â
A twinge of irritation compounded by lack of sleep twisted through her.
Alâs gaze probed hers. âYou donât really want to do this.â
She shifted. âThatâs not the point.â
âYouâre right,â he said with a nod. âThe point is that you have no business crawling on top of nine men to reach the top of a flagpole.â
Katherine grinned in amusement. âOh, I donât know. Some women might find the image of having nine men at their feet appealing.â
Alâs mouth firmed into a straight line. âI wonât allow you to do this.â He turned to leave as if his was the final word.
Katherineâs eyes opened wide. For a moment she was speechless. Where did he get the nerve to order her as if she were one of his employees instead of the other way around? Where did he get the right? Her temperature rose. This wasnât the first time heâd pulled this. She tore after him. âIâm doing it. Youâve got this all confused, Al. I donât take orders from you. I give them to you.â
He stopped and half turned.
âYou canât order me not to climb that flagpole. Do you hear me? You canât order me around.â
His displeasure was almost a tangible thing. He looked big and very ticked off. At this moment no one in his right mind would cross him.
Katherine, however, wasnât in her right mind. His imperious attitude galled her, and it didnât help that she kept catching herself humming
