shoe shopping. By the time she gets back to the office, everything is all better and she’s smiling again.” Ash punched Xander on the arm as he walked quickly out the door. “At least until she has to deal with you again, that is.”
Xander stood there in the middle of his office, almost light-headed from the relief he was feeling. Ash was right. That smile and the hop in her step were more likely due to her going out and hitting the shops. It probably didn’t have anything to do with her having a date with anyone!
He threw back his head and laughed, feeling awesome all of a sudden.
But when his relief was finished, he was still grinning, but he also knew he’d have to make things right again. He’d been pretty horrible to her this morning. And most likely, very unreasonable.
Grabbing his suit coat, he walked quickly out of his office. “I’ll be back in a while, Tilly,” he said to the woman who jerked in fright now every time he spoke to her. He might have some areas to patch up with her as well. She wasn’t the brightest bulb in the package, but she wasn’t as bad as how he’d been treating her. Or maybe she was just nervous because he was always arguing with Autumn, her boss while she was working here.
Once he was out on the street, he walked quickly, his eyes scanning the people walking on the sidewalk and looking into the various stores, trying to find Autumn. He caught her just as she was walking into the big department store on the next block. He picked up his pace and caught up with her as she was entering the shoe department.
He watched with a mixture of amusement and interest as she walked by several shoes, picking them up, examining one, flexing another, sticking her finger inside and doing something. A salesperson approached her and she looked longingly at two different pairs of shoes, one black and one red. But she walked over to the discount shoe rack and picked up a pair of sexy, black heels. They weren’t as hot as the ones she had looked at a moment ago, but they were nice enough. He stayed in the background, but worked his way over to the sales desk, ensuring that he kept out of her line of sight. When the sales clerk was coming back with the shoes she’d selected in her size, Xander pulled him over. “Bring her the shoes in her size she’d been looking at several minutes ago, okay?” he asked.
The salesperson looked him up and down, then smiled, acknowledging the hand-tailored suit and Indian cotton shirts. Salespeople the world over knew how to pick up the signals of a wealthy customer and cater to them. This one was no exception.
He quickly delivered the originally requested shoes, but then went back to get the other pairs in Autumn’s size. While Xander waited, he picked up several other shoes that he thought she might like, plus a few others that he personally liked. Handing all of them to the salesclerk, he piled the man high with the shoes, telling him to bring all of them in her size as well.
Then Xander sat down in one of the chairs and watched as Autumn tried on each pair of shoes. He could tell by the expression on her face which ones she liked and which she didn’t like. The salesperson was perfect, telling her that he didn’t have anything else to do so he didn’t mind getting her shoes in the various sizes “just for fun” was what he said.
Each time Autumn tried on a new pair, if she liked it, Xander would signal to the salesperson to put them in one pile. If she didn’t like the shoe, the clerk put them in another pile. It was the best lunchtime break he’d had in a long, long time. Well, besides the lunch he’d spent with her at Durango’s yesterday. She’d been so fun and free, talking about everything and anything. He’d enjoyed just looking at her smiling face.
In the end, she purchased her discounted, black shoes and walked out of the store, still feeling pretty good. When she was out of sight, Xander walked up to the salesclerk and handed him his
