cells?â
âNo, thereâs not much. Weâre going to have to look at nearly all of them. Reg and Alex are going to be busy.â
âBugger. Want a coffee?â
âNah, Iâve already had three.â
âIs the boss in yet?â
âShe got in half an hour ago. I filled her in on yesterday. No word from the suits.â
âHopefully theyâve crawled back under their rock for a while.â
âDo you want to have a look at these again?â Ed nodded at the list on his desk.
âYeah, you never know, for the first time in history you might have missed something.â
They spent the morning in relative silence, trawling through online records, breaking for a quick sandwich at lunchtime. Theyâd been back at it for a solid couple of hours when they were interrupted by Sorenson.
âThatâs what I like to see, my two best detectives hard at it.â
The honey in her tone instantly alerted them that something was up.
âEd, can you step into my office for a few minutes. Thereâs someone Iâd like you to meet.â
Ed looked at Phil. Phil responded with a slight shrug. He followed Sorenson along the corridor to her office. She opened the door and waved him inside. Seated with her back to them was a young woman. She stood up and turned around as they entered. With a jolt, Ed recognised her as the young woman whoâd been having lunch at the café in Jewel Bay the day before. Her intense eyes locked with his again.
âDetective Dyson, Iâd like you to meet Cass Lehman. Miss Lehman is the daughter of one of my dearest friends. She lives in Jewel Bay and she thinks she might be able to assist you with your enquiries.â
There was an edge in Sorensonâs voice that told Ed there was more to it. He switched on his most charming smile.
âMiss Lehman, pleased to meet you. Weâd be very grateful for any assistance.â He shook her hand and glanced over at Sorenson.
âPerhaps you can take Miss Lehman into a private interview room and she can fill you in.â
âOK, Iâll grab Phil.â
âNo, I think only you for the minute.â
He paused, trying to work out what the hell was going on. âOK, right this way, Miss Lehman.â
The woman, whoâd said nothing but a murmured hello up until this point, followed him down the passageway to one of their two interview rooms. He opened the door for her and scanned her face as she passed him. She looked nervous. Ed pulled out a chair for her on one side of the melamine table and sat down opposite her.
âSo, Miss Lehman, what do you know about Janet Hodgson?â
âCall me Cass. Janet Hodgson, was that her name? I donât know anything about her.â
âRight, so, did you see or hear something that might help us find who killed her?â
âUm, no, not yet.â
Ed leant back. âNot yet? So how exactly do you think you can help us?â
Cass took a deep breath. âI see things.â She winced.
âYou see things?â
âI have a special ability. When I visit a place where someone died violently I experience their death.â
âUh huh.â Ed was already imagining what Phil would say if she was in the room. He could understand why Sorenson had wanted him to handle this. It was only the knowledge that this was the daughter of one of Sorensonâs âdearest friendsâ that stopped him from dismissing her as a crank and marching her out of the station. âAnd how will that help us exactly?â
âI see and feel what the person felt while they were dying. Itâs like an imprint of their death. For a few minutes itâs like Iâm the one who died.â
âSo â¦?â He let the question hang.
âI want to visit the place she died and see if she saw the man who attacked her. I might be able to give you a description.â
Ed sat there staring at her. Sorenson had to be
