ignore her request. I seemed to be fitting in okay so far, and I didn't want to jeopardize that.
"Angela Tilson line two please," came a soft voice over the intercom.
"Excuse me," I said to Priscilla, who dismissed me with a nod. She had stressed that personal calls during working hours were frowned upon, and that cellphones were forbidden entirely on the sales floor. Not that there was anywhere on my "uniform" to keep a cellphone.
Priscilla knew about Maria though, and that she might need me in an emergency. Normally, I called to check on her only during my breaks. Getting a call while I was on the floor made me a little worried that something might have happened, so I hurried to the back office.
"Hello Angela," said Antonio.
My shoulders sagged with relief to know that it wasn’t Maria calling with an emergency. But, my relief was quickly replaced with apprehension, hearing the silky sound of Antonio’s voice after almost a week of not seeing him at all.
"Hello," I said, trying to speak casually in spite of my racing heart. "How are you?"
"I am well, thank you," he replied. "I need to see you."
My stomach twisted in anticipation and dread. It took me a moment before words finally came out. "When?"
"I’m waiting out front in the limo," he said. "Just tell Priscilla you need to leave early and that she’ll need to put together an outfit for you for tonight's dinner. She can have it sent over."
"All right," I said. Another event? I wondered what this one was.
I found Priscilla in the shoe department and repeated Antonio’s message.
She tilted her head, one brow arched. I had come to recognize this as a reflection of appraisal on her part. It might mean, "I’m very impressed," or it might mean, "oh my, how can we fix this?" Since the message had come from her boss, I chose to believe it meant that I was earning her approval.
"I will indeed find you something for tonight, my dear," she said, giving me her once-over appraisal. "Something… " she reached out, taking my chin in her hand and turning my face gently from side to side, "fitting for the occasion."
She shooed me away a moment later. I gathered my purse and headed to the front of the store. My heart thumped in my chest, so hard I could barely breathe. I already knew Priscilla’s taste was incredible. Everything she chose for me to wear in the store made me feel as fabulous on the inside as I looked on the outside. I couldn’t wait to see what she’d choose for tonight's event.
As promised, Antonio was waiting for me outside. He leaned back against the limousine with his dark gray suit unbuttoned, one hand in his pocket as he chatted with Thompson. My heart skipped a beat when he glanced up, acknowledging me with a slight dip of his head and that little lopsided smile that had been visiting my dreams so many times over the past week.
He nodded to Thompson when I was a few steps away. Thompson turned to me with a curt nod before heading around to the driver’s side.
"Hello," Antonio said, and to my surprise, he stepped closer, putting his hands on my arms as he leaned in to kiss first one cheek, and then the other. "European custom," he chuckled, leaning back and running his hand absently over his watch.
I touched a hand to my cheek, hoping to hide the blush I felt creeping up.
"You’ll get a lot of that tonight," he said, opening the car door.
I climbed into the limo, adjusting my skirt.
"I’m sorry for the short notice, but I really need you." He rested a hand on the doorframe, leaning down to speak to me. "It's important. By the way, Priscilla tells me you have learned much in this short time."
He straightened and closed the door, leaving me to wonder about this sudden request. But it was the words "I really need you," that kept repeating in my head.
"Thompson will pick you up at eight," he said, getting into the limousine on the other side.
"Antonio, this really is short notice."
"I know," he said, with a smooth arrogance that said
