came off as malevolent and strange. “Then come and get it, Sa-man- tha .” He held it out to me, like a dare.
Don’t let this asshole get to you. That’s what he wants. So I strode over and reached for the script. Just as I held it in my grasp, he pulled on it harshly, causing me to lurch forward and stumble to the floor, on my knees.
Waves of anger and humiliation rolled off of me, but I quickly scampered onto my feet, not wanting to be under him in any way.
“What the fuck bullshit maneuver was that ?” I screamed at him. I was now fully up, but he was still hovering in my space, not touching me but definitely crowding me enough so I backed up against the wall. Holding my script in his arm, close to his chest, he leaned his other arm on the wall by my head.
“Such a clumsy little thing, Ms. Lockhart. You probably have too much—how do I say it?—pent-up energy stored. I can help you release some of that.”
I pushed back on his chest with both my hands, but— fuck —he was solid and barely moved an inch. If I had to kick him in his nads to get out of there, I would, but I really didn’t want it to have to come to that. My heart started pounding into my throat, my adrenaline spiking. “Just give me my script and I’ll try and pretend this bullshit never happened.”
Suddenly I heard footsteps and a deep, pissed-off male voice. “What the fuck? Get the hell away from her, Schiller. Now .”
Oh my God, it was Kyle! I have never, in my life, been so unbelievably happy to see someone. I let out a sound, something between relief and laughter. Derek’s whole body tensed, his face sneering at the sight of him.
“Masterson, what the hell are you doing here? The rehearsal space is closed to the public, and you are definitely never welcome in my theater,” he jeered while trying to block my view of Kyle with his body.
Kyle stalked over to where we were, and Derek backed away from me immediately, seeming unsure of himself for the first time. Kyle came up close, holding me by my shoulders while perusing me from head to toe. “Did he hurt you?”
I couldn’t talk, my throat had constricted and it was hard enough to breathe, nevertheless answer him, so I gave a quick shake of my head. He cradled my neck with the palm of his hand and his mouth tightened as soon as he felt me shaking. He turned toward Schiller.
“Give her the script and stay the fuck away from her. I have no problem filing a restraining order against you. Certainly wouldn’t be the first time.”
Even though Kyle’s tone was eerily calm, the fury radiated off of him in waves, his eyes pinning Derek with an intensity not to be underestimated. Schiller must have sensed it too because he practically tossed the script at me and backed away even farther from us, a look hovering between fear and disgust on his face.
“Can’t believe you’re with this piece of shit, Samantha. I thought you had better standards than this…this shyster .”
I wasn’t with Kyle, really, but I was sure as hell not going to tell Schiller that right now. I looked up at Kyle to gauge how he wanted to play this one. Instead, he just kept staring at Derek, like they were in some sort of Alpha-dog challenge. The muscles in his jaw twitched and his usually gorgeous mouth was pressed in a tight line. Then, he placed his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close to his rock-solid frame.
“She’s off-limits to you, asshole. Keep the fuck away from Samantha and we won’t have any problems. Got it?”
“Fine,” he spat, gathering his things. “Not that interested anyways. Samantha, just do your job and don’t leave your shit behind again. I have no problem firing your ass if you step out of line.”
Suddenly Kyle dropped his arm from me and stalked toward Derek, making him flounder backward toward the exit. He stopped just a hairsbreadth away from him, pointed his finger in his face and growled, “Don’t even think about threatening her in any way. If I hear
